Be interesting if California lead that charge.

To be fair Northern Ireland could leave the UK with a simple majority winning a referendum. So I can see where he'd get the idea from.

*referendums are where people's votes actually do matter. Not some bullshit electoral college letting a minority hold a majority hostage. Not that you'd know.

The non-sarcastic answer is that it's only been actually attempted once, and that led to the Civil War. There have been some court cases pertaining to it, I think, and the ruling was something like a unilateral decision to leave is unconstitutional--which sort of leaves the door open for a state to ask to leave, and then the federal government giving permission. California's economy is larger than all but 6 countries in the world (yes, you read that correctly), so the feds would never let it leave.

I knew about the size of the economy there that's why I thought if people there wanted it it would be armed to the teeth financially to try make it happen.

Plus that succession leading to the civil war was for totally different reasons than one happening today.

Plus it's an interesting idea. America is completely divided into two idealogies that don't seem to be able to coexist much longer so split it into two countries. It's not freedom if the people in a state or states are not allowed leave if it's not working out?

Trump better not mess with our surf breaks..We have all surfed shifty beach breaks. We've seen perfect beach breaks pumping beautiful A-frames when suddenly, in a matter of days or even hours, conditions change and the same peak no longer exists...I can't live like that...

A law against a state leaving is as illogical as an "illegal war"--both acts are the very essence of the rejection of law. So my serious is answer is: yes, a state can leave, but it won't leave because they would get crushed by the other states.

More importantly, there is no longer any political division in the United States that operates on simple geographic borders, as the British Isles do due to centuries of history. In dime's example of California, within it there are left wing pockets in big cities like SF/LA and in counties as tiny as Humboldt, and the same with right wing pockets as urban as Orange County/SD and as agrarian as Bakersfield. These partisan pockets exist in every state in the US, and any effort for one of them to pull away would be completely chaotic and unsustainable.

Seriously though the southern states still identify as seperate and forced to be part of the union. If a state like CA brought the case to leave it would be the same thing from the other end of the spectrum. Be interesting to see how that played out.

Can't see all the armed rednecks getting worked up about the libtard states wantin to leave. They'd probably join in.

Read GH's post. The divide in this country does not follow state lines.

Just read that. Think that same divide is worldwide now in every country.

CA could afford it and be self sustaining if it left though I reckon.

Again, any attempted secession by whoever's leading California would also result in the state completely falling apart into several, maybe even dozens, of substates consisting of areas that don't want to go along with the secession. It would be nowhere near a top 10 world economy after that splintering.
