Back in 2006, I listened to this album every day on the bus home from bar exam prep. At the exact moment each day that this song was playing I would see the Manhattan skyline as we were heading north. It’s the vision i just associate with the song, and I count myself a big defender of this one. A song that exists in that time and place for me.

I like parts of it. The chorus is just so unmusical

"Unmusical" is an adjective meaning "not pleasing to the ear"

No, that’s made up. Music is musical by definition.

If you had said the verses, I would have agreed.

At least the verses don't sound like he's totally winging it, flailing around in reach for a half-remembered melody

They don’t sound “pleasing to the ear”
The chorus does though.

Between the two of us we make up one fan of this totally mediocre song

Agree. Gone means something though. It invokes more feeling than say WWS or Severed Hand. A mediocre song that moves someone will always be valued over one that doesn’t.

Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
I definitely think the chorus is a rare moment in PRAMG Pearl Jam where we have the opposite of word salad -- the melody sounds like it's making too much effort to account for the lack of words -- but if it means losing the beautiful parts of the song (and that melody, which is nice in itself) just because of an underwritten chorus, nah, it's not that bad
funny story: I used to think lyrics were "I'm gooooooone.... goooooone... this time I'm... goooo-eee-ooooo-eeeeee-ooooo-hooone... goooone... this time I'm.... goooooo-hoooo-oooooon"
when there's actually a few more words than that, but Ed's enunciation being like it is, he kinda just creates a weird whale sound out of it
anyway, I'm glad about a flawed PJ song that I can accept the flaws of these days, and this one was an album favourite almost immediately
some of my other favourite bands have written weak choruses too, but what's around it is so nice it's not ruined; I'll take that over a song that gets destroyed with its chorus
