When you hit about 32 you realize Elliott Smith and most 90s lofi don't really deserve your valuable time

A band like Sponge you could listen to ironically but not Elliott

Not only was he authentic, he was also a hell of a composer. I get wanting to move on from that kinda stuff when you hit maturity, but I can't listen to something like "Oh Well Okay" (or even just look at its chord chart) and not be bowled over.

Elliott Smith was an ok songwriter, but his popularity among a very specific age group is terribly disproportionate to the quality of his works. Unless I watch some indie movie that shoves him into the soundtrack I doubt I'll ever listen to any of his songs again.

I probably am. But that's exactly how good a songwriter he was.

He was a master at writing these airy, effortless-sounding compositions that were actually really elaborate, with gut-wrenchingly visceral lyrics, and melting harmonic complexity down to ooze out ridiculously wonderful pop as catchy as any Lennon-McCartney joint. Dismissing him as "an OK songwriter" is like saying "yeah I never really paid much attention to his stuff, but I kinda remember that one song from that movie, and I'd like to feel superior today, so."
