We're faced with another buffoon who will fill his cabinet with selfish nitwits, they'll fuck up the world a little bit, then the dems will coast back in 2020. As to one of my largest concerns -- the environment -- I think Obama's Johnny Appleseed approach to private-sector economic initiatives for green companies will offset Trump's impacts to a significant degree. Wash, rinse, repeat, and spend the next four years praying no bombs go off because someone made fun of our President's hairline.
We're in the same boat with a lot of feelings, trag, but I'd caution on the bit I've bolded above. Remember: that's what most people said about Bush in 2000, too (just replace "2020" with "2004").
Ack, dammit, you're right. Couldn't you please just let me relax into complacency, ST?
Sorry, trag, I'll try to cool it. I promise not to mention that we've only had 2 purely one-term presidents since 1932.

Oops!

Allow me to rebutt: it's easy to not be hysterical when you are in the one group that is considered "off limits" to the new regime. Other people have very good reasons to be terrified.
Can you give me an example of what you mean? What groups, exactly, are suddenly 'on limits'?
Minority students in colleges who have to read signs saying that "vigilante squads" are coming to tar and feather them. Muslim women having their hijabs ripped off in broad daylight. Women being told "time to get back in the kitchen" at stoplights, and then when the attacker realizes they're Mexican, they add in "go back to your country." Things like "Trump'a America Now, Get Out N------" on the side of a bridge. The KKK openly marching in celebration in North Carolina. Women being openly groped in the streets.

All in the first 24 hours. So you know, no big deal.
My parents' former neighbors (who are white, one is even British) have an adopted daughter who is black, and she goes to a very, very white neighborhood elementary school. She came home yesterday to ask when she'd be leaving the school, because a number of her classmates told her that she's not allowed anymore because of the new president. USA?
That's pretty bad and it's tragic since we have existed as a nation for so long without any of this type of thing happening, but again, just so I fully understand, which laws or executive actions did Trump enact to cause this?
You're being disingenuous. Obviously, he has not passed any actions or supported any laws to cause something like this, but it's a clear example of how the rhetoric of his campaign has affected how very impressionable people--kids, in this case--misunderstand race. And Orpheus's examples are just a few of many that demonstrate that Trump's campaign has contributed to an atmosphere or permissiveness for acting racist, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, and misogynistic in public. None of us said this never happened before, but to pretend that this stuff isn't percolating to the surface and happening on a wider scale in a way it hasn't in years is absurd.
And before you say, "Those are all anecdotal," the data backs it up, too: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/18/us/po ... -rise.html
Is data presented by the NYT carrying as much weight these days?

We are in a whole other ballpark of safe than these vulnerable groups. I get a nice haircut and I can pass. Other folks aren't so lucky.

Also, I work with children and they might be the most dumbfounded group of all. They can't understand being told not to bully each other, and then watching one of the most awful bullies ever become our president. And neither can I.

You don't have to. The tribalism that results from identity politics is toxic to our souls. Reject it and watch the world come alive again.
I know, but the other tribe sure doesn't make it very easy. And it's hard to keep that human torch burning when so few others do.

LV this is for you. Hope you get a chuckle. It's on the election and Star Wars.

This will be very interesting in so many ways, obviously, but im really curious to watch trump moving forward in how he speaks about affairs. Im sure every politican running for office has all these wonderful ideas on how to solve the worlds problems, but once they get the official briefings....I can only imagine how much changes. "oh shit, thats for real??" "what the hell did i just sign up for??"

and strangely unique to Trump, he has had NO first hand experience or knowledge about any of it all.

It was a bit disingenuous, and you are right. Many of Trump's words during the campaign were "dog whistles". And he has done little do reject the gifts of the alt-right and actual deplorable racists. The environment will be toxic for a while during their pathetic little victory marches, with minorities unfairly effected. that doesn't mean he has the power to institutionalize that, which is what I was getting at.

Yes. Try for one day you to view yourself and those around you as human and not some hyphenated string of intersections. You will be a lot of happier.

He absolutely has the power to enact that stuff. With Mike Pence on his ticket? Goodbye womens rights. Pray the gay away? Supreme Court justices? Yes it takes a lot, but trump, pence, and a majority house and senate??

Good advice! Maybe we could share it with all the white supremacists coming out of the woodwork to terrorize our friends and neighbors. I'm sure they'll be very open to it.

It was more a dig at you and your supposed "lack" of a tribe, that's all.

Of course. As I said, it's a different kind of threat. But the point is that Trump is going to be bad for EVERYONE (except the wealthy). We will not be unaffected.

A bunch of his campaign promises disappeared off his website this week. Muslim bans, Paris Accord dismissal, etc.

God willing.

We owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country," Trump said, complimenting her long history of public service.
He also reached out to those who hadn't voted for him.
"I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country," Trump said.
Mr President, it was a great honor being with you and I look forward to being with you many, many more times," Trump said.
The President-elect also said he would seek "counsel" from Obama.
As the pool of reporters were led out, Trump told them several times that Obama was "a very good man."
Who knows how to take this stuff as he is an opportunist and good at telling people what they want to hear, but that is a minor step in the right direction and a far different tone

Love the look on their faces.
Obama: "I can't believe this clown pulled it off"
Trump: "Crap, what have I gotten myself into"

Exactly this. Trump never expected or wanted this. That's bad news cos he's gonna let Pence steer the ship.

We're gonna need a bigger fan.

Yep.
