What does down the stretch even mean when your team is out of it?

This is one of those trades where you go through a whole range of emotions. You're ecstatic that you got a top 5 pitcher. But then there's a piece of you that doesn't want to part with that great of talent. But then you realize just how much better your starting staff will be. Then you hope against all hopes that none of the guys you gave up becomes the next Mike Trout. That's when you know it was a good trade for both teams.

This was a great trade for Boston, considering the type of pitcher Sale is, his age, how much control the team has, and the modest salary they have to pay.

They are improved, but I think you need Price back at his best and see it follow into the playoffs for it to mean anything.

To play devil's advocate... how much better does it actually make them compared to last year? It's a huge addition, but they also replaced Ortiz with Moreland. Plus, they got full, healthy seasons from pretty much all of their important players last year.

They're probably the team to beat in the AL right now, but it's not like they've taken a big step forward over 2016.

On a related note... holy shit, White Sox. That's how you rebuild.

Agreed for the most part. I'm holding out hope that they trade one of their now redundant starting pitchers for an actual replacement for Ortiz and Moreland can just be a backup player.

I don't think they make any more real additions before the season starts, although, if Encarnacion is still sitting out there a few weeks from now and can be had for 3/50 or something like that I don't know how they pass.

We are living in a time where possibly getting the last 3 outs in a baseball game is worth 17.2 million per year.

You know why "Moneyball" doesn't work? Because every team is using it now, so there's no longer a competitive advantage.

You know why "Moneyball" doesn't work? Because every team is using it now, so there's no longer a competitive advantage.

In a sense it does work because if you stopped doing it you'd be at a competitive disadvantage.

Did moneyball ever really work?

When Barry Zito played for the A's it sort of did until Oakland would inevitably crap themselves against the Yankees.
