Goddamn, 54? You have me on quantity, but there are a lot of movies that didn't interest me on there. I think I may have you on quality.

Most of them weren't great. But I'm an optimist. And I looooove going to the movies.

Spotlight was okay. A little dry. Tom McCarthy has made better movies.

I really enjoyed it. I should have a top ten of 2015 list ready in a week or so, and Spotlight will definitely be on it.
It's both a return to form and a departure for director Tom McCarthy. It's a return to form in that this is a really good movie after the mess that was his last movie, The Cobbler. It's a departure in that it plays with new ideas, as opposed to his old standby "what does it mean to make your own family?"

The Visitor is probably his best.

I agree, The Visitor is his best. He was also a writer on Up, which makes a lot of sense.

While I appreciate that he's trying new things, I wonder if it's for the best. The high-concept trappings of The Cobbler and the political impetus of Spotlight both clouded his usual humanist tendencies and compromised the final products, I felt. I think he's best working small and subtly exploring big ideas, not the other way around.

You definitely have a point. But his first three movies are pretty similar in a lot of ways. I can't imagine he'd be interested in doing that forever. And Spotlight is a smaller movie than it seems. Yes, it deals with a huge issue. But it does it by looking very closely at the tiny incremental steps painstakingly taken by this small group of people.

Do you guys keep a spreadsheet of movies you've seen or something? I have no idea how many movies I saw this year.

Out of morbid curiosity and a silly loyalty to the genre I saw the fantastic four movie last night. It wasn't good but it seemed overly maligned. A hard movie to like (the characters had no chemistry, the effects weren't great and dooms act 3 motivation came out of nowhere). More boring than bad

I'd be curious to see Trank's original cut. Not sure I'm gonna bother sitting through what was released.

I did walk away curious about. I wouldn't recommend it but I think you would enjoy the feel of the first half of it
