I can get on board with this. Columbine was really the first of its kind and completely all over the news. I remember my dad years later ruminating about this. Having it all over the news made others perk up and think this was something they could also do

Well, one interesting thing I saw is that in the very NYT exit poll they cited, Trump actually had big gains in the lowest two income brackets, while Clinton gained in the middle two brackets, especially that $100k-$200k wrong. I'm not really coming to a conclusion on their point but that citation seems to contradict the point they're trying to make.
In that case, I'd say "Good political journalism is dead" is a pretty solid conclusion.

That's a real interesting way to put it. Most of my students were between 3-4 when 9/11 happened, so they have no memory of it, but whenever it comes up in discussion, they get all somber, serious, and "patriotic." They cannot read 9/11 or stories about 9/11 critically, because the "real" stories they've been told overshadow it.
Also (semi-unrelated but about how students read history): every evil person in a work of literature is Hitler. Hitler Hitler Hitler. They've been told he's the most evil person who's ever lived, and so any story about being mean to others is a parable about Hitler. I read short stories with my students that were written during the Bush II administration that are about the injustice of the Iraq War, and invariably someone will say, "Oh, that's Hitler," and everybody nods.
Vast majority of these are real and confirmed. Judge for yourself, seems like an epidemic to me.
There are like ten examples in that article and there are more than 320 million people living in this country. Like I said, I do not doubt incidents are occurring. That seems inevitable in the wake of a hatemonger like Trump being elected. But that article hardly constitutes an epidemic.
There's my friend who relayed news that a friend of his had been told he should get deported. There's my colleague who in the midst of reporting on Election Day witnessed a group of teens taunting others with calls of "build that wall!" And those are the two I've heard in my own life in 48 hours.
I'm not saying it's an epidemic, I'm not really making any firm judgment, it's just a bit confusing (and I'm not accusing you of doing this) when someone wouldn't consider the possibility that maybe, just maybe, a candidate like Donald Trump has loosened the tongues of some people who feel a bit more emboldened to say some pretty ugly things. I'm not damning the Rust Belt by saying that.
