It depends on the movie. But yes, in a movie that is defined by the majesty of its visual storytelling it is easy to overlook plot points as you're swept up in it. Just like the lyrics are more important in some songs than others, or the lack of meaningful character arcs in ghostbusters doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the film.
