But it does. Had they kept 3PO's memory wipe permanent, it would have been more impactful. He was sacrificed for the greater good. Instead it's "oh yeah, R2 has his memory, everything's ok"

The sacrifice is still the same in world, though. I'm talking about in-world stakes and sacrifices, not how we feel as an audience walking out later. The characters in that moment make a choice not knowing. That's powerful.

But they do know. One of them even makes the statement, “he backs up with R2 all the time.”

Right and 3PO immediately rejects that. It's clear that 3PO doesn't think R2 will be able to back him up.

For the record, I don't love all these choices. The 3PO one is the one that bugs me the most. There are a thousand work-arounds for that problem and JJ clearly went with the one that tugged at the audience. It feels slightly disingenuous. But the thing that helps it for me and the thing that I think matters most is that 3PO still does it without knowing that R2 has a solution.

It also allows R2 to have a "hero" moment with the narrative, which I appreciate as a die-hard R2 fan who is mostly pissed off and bummed out with the way this trilogy has used him -- specifically JJ.

If the C3-PO memory wipe was the only fakeouts/immediate reversal in the movie I could understand the choice, especially to give R2 a hero moment. Unfortunately it just comes off as lazy or cheap because it is one of many.

I mean, if there's no time to stop and mourn a character like Han then it's pretty silly to slow down to mourn 3PO. It's Star Wars.

What I think would have been cool is if R2 had restored his memory all the back to the beginning. It would have been great to see 3PO remember Padme, for example.

Kinda sucks that she wasn't mentioned at all during this.
