swan wrote:Yeah, this album is very good. I like No Cities to Love but this is better. Again I totally see how someone that’s really invested in their old stuff could just hate it. But if you can drop all the extraneous baggage about Janet, St. Vincent & the old records I think it’s objectively a really solid album.
Signed, old school S-K diehard
I feel this is so much better than No Cities...I like that one, but overall it felt kinda the same. Its a good album, had good songs but this feels more like a novelty like The Woods was back in the day.

It's certainly a more experimental (and in some ways, more exciting) listen, although it's hard for me to ever match the feeling of listening to No Cities for the first time when I wasn't sure I'd ever hear another SK album ever again. So it's got that going for it, but I'm not sure, in terms of songwriting, anything here hits me the way something like Price Tag does (there's a few songs on NCTL that I'd put up there with anything they've ever done; I'm not sure I'd go quite that far with the new one).
That being said, it's very interesting (and hard to tell) where they go from here. They were always a band that I thought was more experimental than they got credit for, but did so within the confines of an identifiable sound, and usually confined instrumentation. This album obliterates those confines entirely.

Yeah, i agree with that. This album leaves Corin and Carrie in a new phase. Not only Janet wont be around, musically they expanded their horizons for sure.

Yep, gets better with every spin.
Also I’d like to take this opportunity to restate my belief that All Hands on the Bad One is their best album front to back.

The only acceptable answer is The Woods.

Center > Cities > Woods
I've said it before but as good as The Woods is, I think it's an overrated album.

It's Dig Me Out for me. Or at least it's the album that best captures everything I like about SK. The Woods would be #2 with All Hands a close third.
I found the new one to be a mixed bag. Some of it is good ("Restless", "The Future is Here"), some of it is vaguely irritating ("The Center Won't Hold", "Bad Dance"), some of it sounds like background music for Wal-Mart TV spots ("Can I Go On", "The Dog / The Body"). The lyrics to "Broken" are clumsily direct to the point of crassness. But these are all first impressions. I never even listened to No Cities so I have no idea if this is an improvement.

Ranking Cities over the Woods is like saying Backspacer is your favorite PJ album.

After a third listen i feel the only two songs i dont care about are Love and Bad Dance. They are really bad.
The others are up there with their best work.

It's not the game changing remarkable masterpiece I hear people talk about. It's a good solid record with some great songs.

Love & Bad Dance are tops! I love both. I think they might be my #2 and #3, funnily enough.
