None of us like reading someone else dismiss something that affected us. And I owned Either/Or and xo for many years, plat. I would agree that he created delicately intricate works. I just only found them occasionally affecting or catchy.
And it's not like I'm saying I think he was bad. Lyrically, I felt he offered an openness that could hold your attention, and had a voice that could make lines feel weightier than they would have felt coming from other people. But I just didn't find him evocative enough in his use of language, or gifted with the expressive abilities needed to deliver a payoff on that starting point. As a songwriter, he never turned any emotion or facet of the human experience to an angle that felt new or unexamined, and he never stepped into an idea and changed the way I perceived it. He never cracked my heart open, even if he brushed against it from time to time.

Fair enough, McP. But his lyrics about drug and alcohol use (Needle In the Hay and Between the Bars both come to mind) are unmatched, IMO.
I also think it's unfair to say "he didn't reinvent the wheel, so he's just okay." If I only listened to songwriters who "stepped into an idea and changed the way I perceived it" or "turned any emotion or facet of the human experience to an angle that felt new" I wouldn't listen to much. Much of my favorite music does neither. There's a galaxy of options between "changed the way I look at the world" and "meh, he's okay."

I'm not sure if I should put this here or in the irrational hate thread but I hate LCD Soundsystem. I loathe them in fact. It's like I break out in hives and uncontrollable itching whenever I hear them. It's iust bad music. They're beyond irritating.

That's nonsense. Pearl Jam's song Corduroy is an objectively good song. It may not be to a particular listener's taste but there is obviously a strong element of songcraft and performance present there that has elevated that piece of music above what would be considered an objectively average song.
