Are you saying you've already decided that you'll hate it even before you've heard it?

I fully respect your right to hate it, btw. Just trying to understand what you mean.

If you had to choose between one of the two scenarios, which would you choose?
1.) superb songs and performances that are produced poorly
2.) terrible songs that sound amazing

Well “poorly” is a relative term. I could stomach Lightning Bolt if the songs were better.
If we’re being the Dark Matter production as a benchmark, then honestly I’d take the latter. Case in point,
Wilco is a band whose production I find really compelling even when the songs aren’t up par. Or like even the worst Radiohead is still engaging for me.
i knew it

There’s simply no world where I can get past the production. I find it quite offensive.
I am lukewarm on a majority of the songs on ST, but I find it to sound like utter shit. The latter does knock that album to dead last in my rankings. So I do get your perspective. I’m not a huge fan of Watts “signature” from what I’ve heard but it’s seems the songs will break through that barrier (for me at least).

Are people expecting a better leak today, given the movie theater thing? Not sure how these work anymore.
I agree the track 5-7 stretch is killer. I’m loving the first two as well. But Setting Sun is the one I keep going back to, which I would not have thought after the first listen.

Lol at the concept of Radiohead having "terrible" songs. We need a much better reference for terrible song with ace production.

Won’t Tell is absolutely brilliant. Clear standout on the first two listens iim the cinema. Really enjoyed Upper Hand and Wreckage too.
Future Days is the only thing stopping Running from being their worst song on a main album.

Bronus.....
That's a new one for me.
I get Trag's production concerns. I REALLY wish Binaural, S/T and Earthling sounded better. I've gotten into Bruce a little more as I've aged, but think those early records sound like crap. Neil, however, has never disappointed me with production. MMJ's only stumble was Evil Urges.
Having said that, I'm not turning a negative ear to Dark Matter. I can't wait to put the headphones in.
