The overwhelming majority like to love it. There is a large vocal minority that wants to start petitions to have it removed from the Star Wars canon and is trolling the internet and creating fake accounts so that the Rotten Tomatoes score is super low.
I genuinely think a lot of people hate it. Which makes a lot of sense to me.
It's anecdotal for sure, but I haven't met a single person IRL who hated it. Some people were lukewarm about it, but the response seems to be mostly positive. Probably talked to about 50 or so people about it.
Like anything else on the internet, the people that hate it are the loudest. I don't know a single "real life" person who hated the movie. I know some people who thought parts were weird. I know some that like R1 and TFA better. But outside of the internet, I haven't talked to anyone who actually hates the movie.

The anonymity of the internet and the just the very nature of it, allows people to be aggressively angry toward the film.

And that sucks because there are those that hated the movie and have valid criticisms but they just get swept up with the trolls and haters.
Agreed. I feel like we've had some good discussions in this thread, but other places online? Yeesh.
Exactly. There are valid critiques of the film.

And I bet every one of them posted ad nauseam about it on the internet.

Apparently not. There are folks I know "in the business" who are talking about how pissed Disney is about TLJ's backlash and there's even (allegedly) doubt in Rian's trilogy now. These people seem to think it's entirely possible that Disney will take Rain's trilogy away from him.

I think that sounds like complete garbage and absolutely stupidity. But here we are.
Well, remember what happened to Josh Trank and Star Wars. It could happen.

Josh Trank and Colin Trevorwhatever were picked to have a SW movie. And they shot Solo twice with different directors. And they basically remade Rogue 1.

Yeah i would say anything can happen.

Yeah he did. That whole fight was so underwhelming and had horrible CGI.

Figuring out how to present characters who have been built up as extremely powerful - especially when they die- is something a lot of movies and video games can’t seem to get right

Yeah, sometimes power is easier to imagine than to portray appropriately.

Yeah but so much of that had to do with Josh specifically; with this addiction and personal stuff. Disney by all accounts LOVES Rian.

I think the way Darth Vader and the Emperor (Darth Sidious) died in ROTJ was excellent.

Shut up.
Spoiler: show
Just in case it isn't 100% clear, this is yet another case of me agreeing with you and using humor to express it.

Oh yeah, for sure. Those scenes are some of the best in the whole series.

We'll see. Again that's a fear, but Disney has more money than God, and presumably pretty sophisticated ways to separate noise from data.

TFA made over $2 billion during it's theatrical run, world wide. The Last Jedi is at $1.1 billion and hasn't even opened in China yet. Word on the street is that Disney never expected this to surpass TFA because TFA was the first Star Wars film in a decade and it was the first Star Wars content to feature OT characters in over 30 years. From what I can gather the production budget (before marketing ) was around $240 million which means TLJ made more than 2.5 times that amount (the magic number that studios need to hit in order to make a profit, allegedly) and it's still climbing. There's a good shot this movie will make $1.3 to $1.5 billion worldwide before it's theatrical run ends. That's before Blu-Ray/4K/DVD sales and doesn't include toys and merch.

By all regular standards TLJ was a massive hit. Any other studio would be thrilled to have it's numbers. But because it's under performed based on TFA, it's being viewed by some as a massive flop? That's lunacy.

yeah, I'd be wary of any rumors like that until something bears fruit for all those reasons
