I was just curious so I checked audience (rather than critic) scores on a few aggregators. The numbers in parentheses is the number of votes. Cinescore is an industry site that does exit movie surveying, so it's not an online poll and subject to more rigorous demographic controls (but of course just captures one moment in time)

We see that the metacritic score is low, but that's also a very small sample size compared to what we see elsewhere. The Cinescore score is the only controlled data, and that's constant across all three movies. There is a huge drop off on RT, but what is kind of striking about that score is how many votes it has in such a short period of time (almost 1.5 times as many as rouge one and closing in on FA after only three weeks in theaters). That does point to some unusual behavior amongst users.

By far and away the largest sample is found on IMDB, and while it scored the lowest of the three in terms of audience reaction (and has the fewest votes,not surprising given how little it's been out) the three movies are all pretty close together, and there is by far the largest sample size on IMDB.


I am a bit skeptical of that RT number, especially with some of the decent reporting that has reason to believe that number is the product of a particular campaign (because the RT scores are used as short hand for quality more than what you find on IMDB). If that number was legit you'd expect to see a greater disparity between TLJ and the other movies on IMDB.

Good data. I believe the IMDB score will drop to 7,5 soon, as all indicators show that. Revenge Of The Sith has Arithmetic mean = 7.6 Median = 8 while for TLJ it's Arithmetic mean = 7.2 Median = 8. The user score among men is 7,5 and 7,4 for adults. The same score for Revenge is 7,6 and 7,5.

The fact that the IMDB score is the same for TLJ and RotS shows how flawed that system is.

Well, it's based on what a large group of people think. I think RotS is a far superior movie, but it's about the average score of a large group of people.

What is so strange about that? I've never praised TLJ. I think ROTS is up there with Rogue One as a great modern SW movie.

Leia using the Force to overcome death was my biggest issue with the film but on second viewing it's pretty clear that she doesn't use the Force to come back to life but rather knows she's about to be attacked and uses the Force to KEEP from dying and preserve herself in space.

Also, that ending, which I always loved, is SUPER profound. I can't imagine how how anyone who was a child when the OT came out isn't moved by that ending. There's literally 9 to 12 year old kids playing with a Luke Skywalker action figure and then one of them uses the Force to grab a broom and then he looks up at the infinite universe, at the stars above, and uses that broom as a make-shift light-saber. It's profound and glorious. It's not only the most perfect ending for (thematically) for Johnson's film but maybe the best meta-ending of any Star Wars film ever.

Luke’s death as the ending could’ve worked. But it would’ve been a pretty big downer. That scene was so fucking perfect for that character. Those twin suns...

I may have missed a page where it was discussed, but humor me: what happened to Luke's hand? Did it go into the Force as well? It's not organic so wouldn't that have just fallen to the ground along with his robe?

Someone did make the point about Obi wans cloak in ANH, yodas blanket In ROTJ and Luke’s cloak in TLJ. How do they decide which clothes come with them through into the force ?
