Our non-US friends obviously don't understand this at all.McParadigm wrote:The irony here is that only Trump can create the calm she's talking about. If you are a Dreamer, an environment voter, or a member of the LGBT community (among others), this is a president who has expressed an interest in doing things that could cause irreparable harm in terms of its impact on you. If he were to begin talking about his actual plans as president, and if they were deeply tempered in the way his rhetoric about Obama has become, then you'd see a lot of calming down.Bi_3 wrote:Just read some of the Twitter responses to Oprah's "Hope Lives" remark... what fucking planet are these people on? Should have taken my own advice but I figure if Oprah would say "we can be unified and make this work", progressives would listen.
If Hillary had won on a platform that vowed to take all guns away, and to place the name of anyone owning more than 5 on a public "dangerous peoples" list, I wouldn't expect or try to scold gun owners to play nice about it, either.

It's almost like Hitler being elected president, but with the public knowing clear well in advance that he is planning the holocaust.
It's scary, scary shit. Not to be taken lightly.
There have been protests over this. A lot of them. QUICK - TO THE STREETS!How many people have been deported under Obama?
President Barack Obama has often been referred to by immigration groups as the "Deporter in Chief."
Between 2009 and 2015 his administration has removed more than 2.5 million people through immigration orders, which doesn’t include the number of people who "self-deported" or were turned away and/or returned to their home country at the border by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
How does he compare to other presidents?
According to governmental data, the Obama administration has deported more people than any other president's administration in history.
In fact, they have deported more than the sum of all the presidents of the 20th century.
President George W. Bush's administration deported just over two million during his time in office; and Obama’s numbers don’t reflect his last year in office, for which data is not yet available.
If I remember correctly the states that passed laws like this have stipulations in them that they would only be enacted if enough states passed similar laws to render the electoral college moot.Strat wrote:bahahaha!! Maryland officially became the first state on Tuesday to approve a plan to give its electoral votes for president to the winner of the national popular vote instead of the candidate chosen by state voters.updated 4/11/2007 11:17:13 AM ET
For what it's worth - I'm pretty much team Spenno on all of this. The idea of protesting a democratic election result is the strangest thing to me. It's not like this election was rigged, or that Trump charmed his way in only to then show his true hidden agenda. I don't know if it does. I've said it before that it should go, but if I'm being honest with myself it's been an emotional reaction to my side losing.dimejinky99 wrote:Rangi Guy wrote:For what it's worth - I'm pretty much team Spenno on all of this. How democratically elected are you if you've lost the popular vote?
Electoral college needs to go.
Also, these protests aren't necessarily protesting the results of the election, and more that they're protesting the President-elect himself. Just because someone or something is elected or legislated through all proper channels of due process, doesn't mean the people can't protest against it.theplatypus wrote:I disagree with Rangi that protesting serves no purpose, for the reasons I outlined in my earlier post. But the thing about the electoral college is that it was agreed upon prior to the election. If all this kicking and screaming leads to any sort of re-evaluation of the system, it's going to affect the next election, not this one retroactively.

"If you're a Trump voter who is tired of being called a bigot, if you say you voted for him based on gun rights or economic issues, or because you think Hillary really was that awful, and in spite of his rhetoric, rather than because of it, I believe you. If you're in my life, I clearly don't think you're a vile hateful person. But if you're now watching protests across the country and you don't understand why, or think they are just being sore losers, let me break something down for you. These people aren't just angry or sad that someone they didn't support won the election, they're scared.
They're black Americans who hear talk of law and order and remember a racially charged stop and frisk program, or see an emboldened KKK holding a celebratory parade.
They're Muslim Americans who worry that spitting in their face is now okay and violations of their rights to assemble and their rights to privacy are about to come.
They're LGBT Americans who fear not just of the loss of marriage rights or restaurants gaining the right not to serve them, but of an administration that thinks it's more important to research electrocuting the gay out of them than AIDS.
They're Hispanic and Latino Americans who are scared their children will be bullied in schools, and their families ripped apart while their culture is mocked.
They're women who are wondering if we've normalized groping, and if their career endeavors will be judged by their face and body, and not their minds
I believe you when you say you didn't vote for any of these things. Most of America wasn't thrilled with the choices we had in this election. But If you didn't know that this is why they're protesting, if you think it's really just about free tuition or more government giveaways, then you, like the elite liberals you love to castigate, have also not been listening. If you're tired of being called a bigot, then you need to use the same voice you used on Tuesday and speak out against these things fully and clearly. It's not enough that you didn't say them yourself. You need to reassure your friends and family members who feel like they no longer have a seat at the table that you still stand with them, even if your priorities were different on Tuesday. If you aren't willing to do that, then you have no right to call for unity." - Michael Rex
