As somebody who came in between Backspacer and Lightning Bolt, I still hate Riot Act <_<
But it IS interesting having transitioned from a fan that came in when Backspacer was the latest album and it was years old, having gradually learned their catalog from its fully-formed state...
To then see Lightning Bolt, Gigaton come out, and now Dark Matter.
I remember HATING Backspacer when I first heard it because at the time I mostly just knew songs from Ten and it did NOT sound like Pearl Jam at all, going from Ten to Backspacer (They were both DLC in Rock Band). Over time I learned more and more songs from their catalog. I think I thought LB > Backspacer when it came out (Id have to check my old posts) and it was exciting because it was the first "new" Pearl Jam Id ever experienced, but over time Backspacer grew on me and now I definitely think Backspacer > Lightning Bolt, and my opinions on both are weakened after experiencing Gigaton. I dunno how different opinions would be had I joined as a fan now but I think I thought a bit more highly of Lightning Bolt and Backspacer before Gigaton existed. So its kinda interesting to be able to experience those shifting things vs my opinions when I first started listening, and its only recently Ive been able to have multiple albums I experienced live.
It seems like new and old fans both have interesting perspectives but they ARE different ones I think, since coming in new you can hear everything without any influence of the time period and just judge the music itself in the context of their entire catalog. Its weird getting to be on the other side of that now though and see what its like to have an evolving catalog

So, you don't think the culture of the early 90's had a different effect on an album than say when Gigaton was released, and no one other than some of us message board nerds gives a flying F about PJ?
that question has nothing to do with what I said
if I think "things were different then" because times have changed, that has zero bearing on which albums I think you're allowed to enjoy most: speaking "objectively", Riot Act wipes the floor with Ten in just about every way
Lol. That's all I got.
that's all you ever had, laughing at people like a pompous asshole
Lol. You're the one in here arguing with folks in an angry manner. Maybe it's just your style.

I like this one.
Gives me "Should've stayed for the sunset, if not for me" vibes.
And since it's Ed, "sun" rhymes with "dawn" impeccably.

I was talking to a 27 year old coworker and I mentioned Pearl Jam is my favorite band, and he stared at me for a second and started laughing.
I'm wondering do I re-evaluate my music choices and/or go to HR.

Yesterday when I listened to all of those IDLES songs, I had the opposite reaction.

pretty much no one at my wife's job, nor mine, even knows who Pearl Jam is.
ONE of my wife's direct reports mentioned Just Breathe "from the CW" at a team hang-out they had
We're on the other side of the generational chasm.

These lyrics seem pretty cringe. Hopefully there are the most basic parts of their tracks.
Whatever happened to:
Large fingers pushing paint.
You’re God and you got big hands.
The colors blend.
The challenges you. give. Man.

What are we doing here? People can like what they like. No need to get personal or result to insults.
Unless it's about Stip's adoration for Lightning Bolt and Backspacer...

28 years. A divorce. A couple kids. He's not that guy anymore. No one should expect he would be.

Let's re-center and get back to doing what this place does best
It's not insulting each other...We only direct passive aggressive resentment towards the band around here.

for the record, I simply accused someone of "laughing at people like a pompous asshole"; I didn't actually call him a pompous asshole
