Easy setup. Versatile. Well built. Preamp. The 33/45 converter is handy. Forward and reverse play if you feel like becoming a spinster. Price.

Others could provide a more educated response but basically some records spin at 33 1/3 rpms and others spin at 45 rpms. YOu will need a converter for that. Many 7" singles play at different speeds because there is less information on the disc. Some are pressed differently? the new QOTSA is played at 45 RPM

But getting something that you can update/fix is important. I believe some needles/diamonds can be hard to replace. Versatility is key unless you are Doug RR

I must admit that a lot of this is news to me - I've got an old technics turntable which has a built in converter, and I only found out the other day that not all turntables have an automatic needle return when the finish playing...

I wish mine had automatic needle return. And play. Those are nifty. There have been a few times I have fallen asleep to the soothing sounds of Justin Vernon while the needle hops up and down for hours.

When you are starting out you should stick to budget friendly. Records are expensive and addicting. You will also want a decent receiver and speakers.

Up until a couple of days ago - I had assumed that these things were standard. I was going to look at upgrading, just cause of the age of the thing, but not any more

I bought a used Denon receiver for $200 and a pair of floor speakers for the same price.

I'm in the process of moving. I was able to get all my records to my current place in 4 boxes. I made it to "R" before filling up the same boxes this time. Need probably 3 more boxes.

If you start with low-end plastic turntables you might end up being frustrated or turned-off. The better thing to do is to buy a vintage deck of a good name (Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz) that holds it's value in case you give up and want to sell it. I strongly suggest getting on your local craigslist or ebay and look for something like this;
