They are! Not even angry like on Gigaton they just sound betrayed and sad.zeb wrote:Overall - with only a few exceptions - the lyrics on this record are a total bummer.

Re: Dark Matter: Official Album Thread
OK, after my movie theater experience, here's where I stand.
I don't think this album is for me. There's no way it cracks my top 5, and it's probably near the bottom. They've somehow simultaneously not returned to form and yet not broken any new ground. It's over produced with just way too much going on most of the time. This album oozes Los Angeles out of all of its pores.
I think the band has ceded too much control to Ed. I know that Backspacer had Into The Wild threaded throughout, but this album is little more than Earthling 2. It's all Ed and Watt and nearly nothing of note from the rest of the band. And Ed sings way too much. His vocals are just one more thing that could be stripped back a little to make this album really shine.
I had it's moments. I had a favorite song. I had several "ooh, cool" moments, but overall, I'm ready for #13.

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Oh if bummer just meant bad my girlfriend agreed. The audio was not very good the first go around and it was impossible to make out what Eddie was saying. She liked the album a lot. When it played again with the lyrics she was saying she liked the songs better before she read them lol.
They are a bit blunt but Eddie is Eddie.

This has occurred to me, as well. There is a Cornell presence on this. The recording is obviously not good but one of the outtros (WFS?) has what sounds like a Cornell-like howl by Eddie that got me thinking about it.warehouse wrote:all of the songs are about chris cornell

I strongly got that feeling, too. Chris Cornell seems to be all over this record. Definitely ‘Scared of Fear’, which hit me unexpectedly hard the second go-round with lyrics in the theatre. Grappling with guilt and ‘should I have done something differently’.mikejasond wrote:That would be an interesting turn if he framed Chris’s suicide like the loss of a long relationship. Though some of the lyrics (setting sun especially) seem too direct to not be about the fracturing of a long relationship he thought would last forever. Whether he’s writing about his personal experience or just telling a story though who knows ?warehouse wrote:all of the songs are about chris cornell
Got the same feeling with ‘Setting Sun’ and the (paraphrasing) ‘If you could see what I see now I’m sure you would’ve chosen to stay’, ‘kingdom come’ and being the ‘last one holding on’ — or something to that effect.
What an album. Completely different than I figured through the singles. Sound in the theater (NYC) was absolute dog shit, unfortunately. No surround, just muddled and muffled sound from behind the screen. Interesting: definitely a different mix than on Spotify. ‘Dark Matter’ almost sounded like another take. Guitars and drums were much more natural, while Ed’s voice had a way stronger echo effect.
