I watched The Revenant today, and while it was good overall--I especially liked Tom Hardy--I could've done without the dream sequences. The only other film by Iñárritu that I've seen is Birdman, and while they're definitely different films, one thing I loved about the latter is that the distinction between reality and fantasy didn't matter, and may not even exist in the world of the film. The dream sequences in The Revenant announced themselves too plainly--"This is symbolic, pay attention!"--and it detracted from the story being told in bold, frank terms.

when i first saw it in college i was only really starting to expand my cinematic horizons, and i thought it was one of the darkest/depressing films i had seen
