I also think it’s a bit of a misnomer that they are billed as quasi indie or quasi jam band. I tend to find the most appreciation from hearing them sort of build their songs brick-by-brick in what feels like real time - sometimes starting with the smallest little hook and turning into this enormous sound - I guess that somewhat makes Jim James’ lyrics beside the point for me, though I think his vocal howling can often add that next level intensity as the song hits its apex. It’s not jams built off one or more virtuoso players, but this organic build that only they can do as a band. Kills me every time.

Seeing them at midnight at Bonnaroo in the rain was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Their later output was the most disappointed I've ever been in a band I think. But their early stuff, despite feeling like a band searching for itself, was pretty great .

I love it all. One of the few bands, like Pearl Jam or the Stones and in recent years the Grateful Dead, where I just connect with the music on a deeper spiritual level. I don’t love every song, but I do love every album.
