I just noticed, reading one of the reviews again, this lyric from LTRP: "When the kingdom comes, he puts the records on." The party at the end of the world.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that and being encouraged.

PJ covers the "Doug" theme song?
This def. needs to be on every page of this thread.

Continuation of the fundie religious stuff

The album looks like it may end up having a nice satirical edge to it. But I'm not counting on that as Backspacer should have, and mostly didn't.

It really does.

Though I'm trying not to listen to it again b/c I just got it out of my head.

I think they probably all are interested in being both poppy and experimental at different times; I think pretty much everyone in the band has shown an affinity for both routes through their songwriting.
Thats a different kind of crowd though. There's definitely something to ed wanting to please the crowd maybe too much, he says as much in that pj20 clip when hes wandering round his house.
Well, he definitely deserves more of the blame (or credit), since he's the one steering the ship. That being said, I'm not sure he took anywhere where they didn't want to go. Remember Stone was initially the one interested in making a very concise record the last time around (which wasn't a bad idea in theory at the time, IMO. It's the execution that was off, rather than the idea of having a "pop" record).
I'm not so much blaming him, just thinking that because he's in this headspace we're less likely to get a left turn record or whatever. For that to happen he would have to be the one really gunning for it, or at least really down with the idea.

And i agree with you on the execution thing, i woulda taken an album full of Leatherman, Hitchhiker, Don't gimmie no lip, U, Black red yellow etc. To me thats poppy "fun" PJ. ( i may be the only one  )
Oh god. Except for bry that would be my idea of pj hell
I stared at this post for a few seconds trying to figure out who Bry was.

veevee wrote:According to Ed, this title of this song is a quote that comes from what they told Obama when he got into office.

It opens with a quick, chiming riff and then gets heavy, fast, and punky. YOU BETTER MIND YOUR MANNERS BOY, MIND YOUR MANNERS

The tour is going to be extensive, starting in the US late fall/winter and was planned around what Springsteen did on the Fall/Winter 2003 Rising Tour, so if you want an idea on venues and cities, that's pretty close. Then next Summer is Europe and Winter 14 will be Australia, New Zealand, Japan. Gonna be fun.

The new album is my favorite one they've ever done. Some great short pop songs and some weirder stuff too, and some definite future stadium anthems. It flows kind of like a Guided by Voices record.
I remember this quote as clear as day. Back then I was convinced that veevee had inside information and even now, especially after reading the listening party reviews, I'm convinced of it.

First of all, who in the world would compare a new PJ album to Guided by Voices?
Second, this part really seems to vibe the reviews so far "Some great short pop songs and some weirder stuff too, and some definite future stadium anthems."
Third, I really want this to be legit because of this part "The new album is my favorite one they've ever done."

I am not sure why backspacer should have been satirical. It is a pretty heart on sleeve record.

I don't know if I would have wanted Backspacer to be satirical, but it certainly sounded like it was their 'fun' record, but it didn't feel fun. R.E.M.'s kind of the go-to example for songs that are poppy, melodic and catchy, but have a strong personality to them as well.

So if this guy is right, this song is in fact the Obama comment that IlluminEddie wanted (albeit an inadvertent one). I'm not surprised at all.
:haha: it sounds like ed's sticking up for obama, im sure illuminutjob will love it
I don't think so at all. The song is full of irony, "Mind your manners" is ironic, and the video has footage of bombs going off throughout.
yeah thats kinda what i mean. he's kinda poking fun at the people that were telling obama to mind his manners
And it's really funny now that Obama fixed everything and we are staying out of wars...oh wait.

As fun as pj gets, anyway. I think it was meant to be relieved as much as anything else, but you are still right that rem does this stuff much better
