It opens with a quick, chiming riff and then gets heavy, fast, and punky. YOU BETTER MIND YOUR MANNERS BOY, MIND YOUR MANNERS
The tour is going to be extensive, starting in the US late fall/winter and was planned around what Springsteen did on the Fall/Winter 2003 Rising Tour, so if you want an idea on venues and cities, that's pretty close. Then next Summer is Europe and Winter 14 will be Australia, New Zealand, Japan. Gonna be fun.
The new album is my favorite one they've ever done. Some great short pop songs and some weirder stuff too, and some definite future stadium anthems. It flows kind of like a Guided by Voices record.
So if this guy is right, this song is in fact the Obama comment that IlluminEddie wanted (albeit an inadvertent one). I'm not surprised at all.

it sounds like ed's sticking up for obama, im sure illuminutjob will love it
I don't think so at all. The song is full of irony, "Mind your manners" is ironic, and the video has footage of bombs going off throughout.
yeah thats kinda what i mean. he's kinda poking fun at the people that were telling obama to mind his manners
And it's really funny now that Obama fixed everything and we are staying out of wars...oh wait.
When something's Syrian he wants to put a little bomb on it.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that and being encouraged.
Continuation of the fundie religious stuff
The album looks like it may end up having a nice satirical edge to it. But I'm not counting on that as Backspacer should have, and mostly didn't.
I am not sure why backspacer should have been satirical. It is a pretty heart on sleeve record.
You can't have fun with seriousness and sincerity. There needs to be irreverence and a sense of self-mockery. R.E.M's 'Shiny Happy People' has that in spades, as does a lot of their 'fun' stuff. Michael Stipe doesn't care about what he looks like dancing like a fool. Ed does, or rather, when he dances like a fool, that's not why he's doing it. He thinks he looks totally cool.

There's supposed to be another listening party in London today. I hope we get a few more impressions.

I don't know that I agree. I think some of this is poking fun at himself, at this point. Not shinny happy people level, that is true. But there is some middle ground.
But again, backspacer is a light record, and sometimes fun, but it is not meant to be a fun album in the sense you are describing. Backspacer is a break in the tension after 3 very heavy and dour records.

Hmm, by any chance a Will Oldham/Palace Music fan?

I love Will Oldham! I got lucky enough to see him in NY at some lovely little church performing with Nico Muhly, Valgeir Sigurðsson, and Lucy Liu. Sigur Ros was also there. Pretty amazing experience.

I may be confusing what we have with what I wanted. I don't want to assume that PJ *meant* it to be more ironic than it was. That's just what it needed to be better, imho.

But it's the 'poking fun at himself' thing. That's all I meant by satire, and I don't hear Ed doing it much on Backspacer, if at all.

i dont think either of us are sticking up for obama, we are interpreting what the song/lyric/video are about.

Maybe!
I like Backspacer for what it is. But the chance of having a more interesting album is making that less significant.

You get some in GSMF and Johnny guitar, and the fixer video I think. But not a lot of it, for sure. And it is more not taking yourself seriously than making fun, which is a bit diffrent

Broadly speaking, Pearl jam fans will never grasp the concept that this band don't take themselves or a lot of what they do, as seriously as the fans do themselves.
As a band they'd be really freaked out by the apparent mindlessness of the pit and the over analysis of RM.

We're talking about their approach to an album, judging by what it sounds like, not their approach to life itself.
