Exactly. Its just a cool premise..and its actually a little more conservative than it seems.

But, its well shot and the characters are nice, so you stay for the whole movie.

I've been going through a big Spielberg kick over the last 6 months or so, and last night I rewatched Schindler's List for the first time since I was like 15 or something. I was never a big fan, but I was also never a fan of Saving Private Ryan, which I rewatched recently and loved.

This is the first Spielberg rewatch that I actually liked even less. He doesn't have very many misses, but I think this is one of them. It's a weird jumbling of impulses; arguably cinema's warmest humanist tackling what is probably the most inhumane event in history. Because of this, none of Spielberg's best qualities can shine, and he does not have the sensibility to capture the horror of the Holocaust honestly. It winds up feeling very cold and detached, lacking both visceral brutality and nuanced psychological or political depth. Polanski's The Pianist did all of this right, I think - both far more repulsive and disturbing, but also more sensitive and layered in its humanity. SL just comes off monotonous and desensitizing. I came away frustrated by how ineffective it was. Kubrick was right when he said that Spielberg made a movie about success, while the Holocaust was about failure. Really wish The Aryan Papers had happened instead of this.

The girl in the red coat seemed particularly odd and redundant. I don't understand what Spielberg was trying to convey with that, or at least how that beat hammers anything home more than anything else happening in the movie. So much of this seems incoherent.

Im also in a big Spielberg kick these days...but i havent rewatched that one yet. Its coming.

What do you think about Munich? Its a way more adult view of a human tragedy.

Munich is one on my need-to-rewatch list. I liked it when it came out, but never thought it had much depth. I'm kind of expecting that to change when I see it again.

Ugh. The reenactments were cheesy as fuck. I'd rather they just have a blank screen with the audio tape running than that stupid shit.

Besides being cheesy, you really couldn't tell if all the conversations seen on those reenactments were actually on tape or not, because they played the audio tape only in some scenes.

Infinitely Polar Bear with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana was a great little movie.
Ruffalo was easily better in this one than he was in Spotlight.

Fuck the haters. I really liked it. Beautiful. Superbly performed. Emotional. Quiet. Well paced. And how wonderful to see to stellar actresses in roles that are actually ... you know... people. So many times in movies like this, the two women just sit around at talk about the facts of what they're doing/experiencing. This is just people living. It's so honest, even in some of the more stylized or hyper-real moments.

Todd Haines does amazing things with time.

Not the best picture of the year. But well worth the time. And well worth seeing for the two leads.

i love oscar isaac, but it wasn't worth it today...i'll probably finish it someday though
