Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Crystal Skull is better than Minority Report.LoathedVermin72 wrote:The only Spielberg movies I would call "terrible" are Crystal Skull and Tintin.

It's fine. I don't hate it or anything. I mean, I own it. And I'll watch it sometimes.doug rr wrote:its my favorite movieE.H. Ruddock wrote:Guys, Jaws is a masterpiece.

While I don't think Minority Report is great, Crystal Skull is way worse, joey.durdencommatyler wrote:Crystal Skull is better than Minority Report.LoathedVermin72 wrote:The only Spielberg movies I would call "terrible" are Crystal Skull and Tintin.

it's been a long time since I've seen it, but i don't remember it being that hammy and over the top...it's not like it's one of my favorite movies or anything, i just recall finding it intriguing and enjoyabletragabigzanda wrote:Ugh...I want to love it so much, Lenny. It's Philip K. Dick, Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Von Sydow, and a lot of cool futuristic technology. All the elements are there...lennytheweedwhacker wrote:back off minority report, bustertragabigzanda wrote:Yea, or being supremely disappointed in it. All the framing, editing, and score add up to nothing without a great story, great script, and great characters (see Indiana Jones 4 or Minority Report). I agree that he makes very specific choices to convey his story, but I believe Spielberg's greatest strength is in his storytelling. The technical stuff is in service to that, and your average viewer wouldn't care if the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were shot with a steady-cam or over-the-shoulder unit, just so long as they look BIG.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Oh sure, but the visceral quality is conveyed aesthetically, I mean. Spielberg's use of editing, framing, and score is very specific, and crucial to appreciating his work.durdencommatyler wrote:Well, now, see here. Visceral is something all about, my friend.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Actually, now that I think about it, it kinda makes sense that you're not on big on Spielberg. While his sensibilities seem like something you'd appreciate, the way he conveys them is extremely visual and visceral. It's not necessarily concrete.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Which makes sense, given your interests.durdencommatyler wrote:Both films that do very little for me.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Jaws is one of the best directed, edited, scored, and cast movies of all time. There stretches of filmmaking in there that are just sublime. Like GoodFellas, it's nothing particularly deep, but the craftsmanship is second-to-none.
But it's totally bogged down in ham-fisted dialogue, over-the-top performances, and a relationship between Cruise and his ex-wife that feels completely false. It takes itself too seriously for me to just have fun with it (like, say, the original Total Recall), yet it has too many hammy moments for me to take it seriously.

I would go even further and say that Spielberg has made fewer than five movies I think are bad.

Temple of Doom
AI
War of the Worlds
Jurassic Park 2
There's five that I'd call bad. Just off the top of my head.
