I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. Crystal Skull is better than Minority Report.

It's fine. I don't hate it or anything. I mean, I own it. And I'll watch it sometimes.

While I don't think Minority Report is great, Crystal Skull is way worse, joey.

Both films that do very little for me.
Which makes sense, given your interests.
Actually, now that I think about it, it kinda makes sense that you're not on big on Spielberg. While his sensibilities seem like something you'd appreciate, the way he conveys them is extremely visual and visceral. It's not necessarily concrete.
Well, now, see here. Visceral is something all about, my friend.
Oh sure, but the visceral quality is conveyed aesthetically, I mean. Spielberg's use of editing, framing, and score is very specific, and crucial to appreciating his work.
Yea, or being supremely disappointed in it. All the framing, editing, and score add up to nothing without a great story, great script, and great characters (see Indiana Jones 4 or Minority Report). I agree that he makes very specific choices to convey his story, but I believe Spielberg's greatest strength is in his storytelling. The technical stuff is in service to that, and your average viewer wouldn't care if the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were shot with a steady-cam or over-the-shoulder unit, just so long as they look BIG.
back off minority report, buster
Ugh...I want to love it so much, Lenny. It's Philip K. Dick, Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Von Sydow, and a lot of cool futuristic technology. All the elements are there...

But it's totally bogged down in ham-fisted dialogue, over-the-top performances, and a relationship between Cruise and his ex-wife that feels completely false. It takes itself too seriously for me to just have fun with it (like, say, the original Total Recall), yet it has too many hammy moments for me to take it seriously.
it's been a long time since I've seen it, but i don't remember it being that hammy and over the top...it's not like it's one of my favorite movies or anything, i just recall finding it intriguing and enjoyable

I would go even further and say that Spielberg has made fewer than five movies I think are bad.

Minority Report
Temple of Doom
AI
War of the Worlds
Jurassic Park 2

There's five that I'd call bad. Just off the top of my head.
