An overtly sincere, selfish, saccharine self flagalation with no self awareness or humility. It is truly disgusting and below this band.

Back in the day, when the band wrote something personal they'd come out with something stellar like Off He Goes.

Off he goes is the single most narcissistic song in the catalog

I would've called "Pendulum" more selfish than this song, but as it's cool, nobody cares. This one's not "cool", so it's the first to be accused of being selfish. Grunge was pretty selfish, guys.

Also, the lyrics for Future Days are much better than I thought they were.

They should have spent way more time on FD as a band. Kick Brendan out of the studio and see what the band can come up with. That piano is pointless. jeff could have added much more with a stand up pass, mike or stone on some slide guitar, maybe some bongo work. I dont know.

What a waste of a track. As much as I will always love hearing ed sing, this still just bothers me when it comes on.

Besides those one-off extras, who plays on this?
Ed
Stone - barely

Weren't Mike and Stone playing on this at Wrigley? They were the only good thing about it. Where are they?

And, also, how were they not like -

'Umm, hey ed, you know, yea, besides this song being really brutal, you already have a big fucking love letter to your smokeshow of a wife, and yea, umm, so, waves, having this song on the record is basically the same fucking thing we did with backspacer, umm, maybe do a solo album again, oh, and also, this sucks"

So if I suggested I worked in the industry and could change FD for OTE tomorrow...?

lordy, this song is not that bad to deserve this type of hate. It's superior to Just Breathe and Ole, the last two non-LB singles.

Is the 'waves' in middle there too keep his attention? Distract him with something nice after dissing his wife?

It's a song for one person - his wife - and her benefit only. He could have written it and played it only for her. Instead he puts it on a major public release and actually thinks the whole world needs to hear this abomination. He then thinks it's the kind of track that showcases everything about the band's new record and plays it to one of the biggest audiences they'll ever have live. So yes - it's selfish. Maybe he just cheated on her and had to make up for it.

I wouldn't call Off He Goes is narcissism - it's an expression of criticality of the self. There's a lot of humillity in self criticism and that song is rooted in Vedder saying he is not dependable or reliable to his friends and playing down the view of him as a good guy - the fact it's followed by Habit as well helps a lot because that is also a track saying he almost sees himself at risk of addiction but didn't think someone else would ever fall into it.

It's not a song for him and his wife only, any more than any love song is that. True story: love songs are written and released all the time. I don't get why something is "selfish" or "private" just because you don't like it. The people who *do* like this song will be using it as a wedding song, a relationship song, etc. etc. You can't question Ed's motives for it just because you don't like listening to it.

Also, I'm not even sure it's just about two people. "You and me" could be, like, the fans. It could be "Faithfull 2". It's not closed to that interpretation.

I don't even like just breathe but its better than this. And yeah the fact that its unabashedly aimed at his wife and the lyrics are so so direct and sentimental Makes it kind of weird to listen to for me.

Even if I liked the song, however 'Our future days, days of you and me' would ruin it

Do you feel "awkward" listening to other popular love songs? What makes them different?

I wonder whether knowing to much about Ed and his wife affects our reception of this song. I'd imagine if someone had no idea who Ed really was, or was married to, they could just listen to the song and it would either connect or wouldn't.

I don't mind the song nearly as much as others here. But, I really don't like the fact that its not a full band song. Thought/wished The End would be the last time that'd happen. Strat had some good ideas for it.

I don't know. Something about this one made me :| , on first listen. Loads of cheesy lyrics, that I was a broken man before you saved me shit.....eh. Maybe I don't listen to a lot of love songs.
