Texas continues to look bad for him as well, though I doubt he loses it (if nothing else, other Rs on the ballot are popular and will GOTV for him).

It’s getting harder to ignore the trends. If I were Donald, I would let Democrats spend the next ten months talking up my tariffs and policies, and then end a bunch of them (temporarily) and declare victory the way he did with North Korea....enjoy a few weeks of headlines that calm people and normalize him, even if he never acts on the declaration (tweet). But I think the people who could have talked him into that are the same people who are no longer around.

I mean, pivoting off of a conversation in another thread, I think the reality is that he could win half of these handedly and still lose in 2020. He will very likely win Florida again, he might take Ohio and Pennsylvania, but it looks like that Midwest block that carried him over Hillary has disappeared.

I think the only thing that's a problem for Democrats is that if nothing else changes hands from 2016 (as in, they don't flip AZ, FL, etc), besides the rust belt states that seem most attainable (MI, WI, PA), Democrats would have to win them all to win. They can't get two out of three if nothing else changes.

There are also a lot of chances for a 269/269 vote. If the Dems swing AZ, MI, and WI but Trump keeps everything else for example, it's a tie.

Yeah, he just has to keep a state he narrowly won against a historically unpopular candidate facing a freshly declared e-mail scandal that pales in comparison to every scandal his administration now faces, and which Democrats won by 800,000 votes in 2018 against Republican candidates who are universally more popular there than Trump has ever been as President.

Can you imagine if a foreign power were to attempt to exacerbate that around a major election? They could, and I'm making this up, aid one candidate in getting elected via the viral spread of false information and then immediately attempt to tear them down via the same mechanism. What kind of situation would we be in then?

I don't know, I'll take a voter who applies a little critical thinking to their vote, regardless of who they cast it for, than some ignorant twat who checks every box the same. This particularly applies to local politics for me.

I don't know, I'll take a voter who applies a little critical thinking to their vote, regardless of who they cast it for, than some ignorant twat who checks every box the same. This particularly applies to local politics for me.

I think that local politics is different, especially for races where political party doesn't necessarily serve as a strong indicator of plan for governance. In most metro areas, though, this means voting for the challenger in your respective primary rather than making a substantive choice in the general. And certainly with cases like Roy Moore I applaud people who don't vote party-line (though I would also posit that even in the case of a convicted rapist Democrat I would never turn around and vote for a Republican). But I don't find any value in the idea that being somehow torn between Democrats and Republicans--especially on a national level--is somehow admirable or inherently an expression of critical thinking rather than an indication that you have not thought seriously about your political commitments.

OK, try me.

If you take my worldview, much of which many of you know of from my years of posting in this forum, you'll know that it does not come even close with aligning with either major party in the United States. It's unfortunate, but I'm also realistic enough to know that I likely will never get such an alignment. I'm also realistic enough to know that the American form of government brutally imposes a two party system, and in almost all cases voting for a third party does, at best, jack shit. So what does that leave me with? Well, the best I can manage, since I don't fully trust the agenda of either party, is to vote for gridlock, and ensure that no one party holds all the branches of power in government. That naturally leads to a lot of ticket splitting on my part. I'll let you judge for yourself as to whether that's "an expression of critical thinking", but I would like to hope that it is.
