i don’t know, and it feels weird that i dont. Gigaton has been fully processed as an album for a while and where i land on dark matter ultimately will depend on how it fits with the record (could enhance or detract - River Cross I love as Gigaton’s closer and the end of that album’s journey. Less as a stand alone. But Comes than Goes works primarily for me as a stand alone. It isnt enhanced by Gigaton$.

I assume that's him, he is handling the ring modulator/trem effects. In the chorus you can hear Mike do some blues flourishes on the last chord of each measure. But the main riff is straight doubled, so that could be just Stone and Mike doing a basic run through. Lots of dubbing happening on every guitar where the production deviates for some ear candy, especially the bass.
I can see Watt yelling "Do it again!" at the end of every take.

nice take on that. I couldn't hear Stone doing much rhythm accents other than the You Are effects. But, doubling the riff makes sense.
Surprised that I read some people not hearing much bass come through. I thought Jeff sounds amazing on this track.

punk isn't generally my genre (apart from the Pogues) but she's a big deal in my circle for obvious reason

that's where I'm at currently. An asterisk for Comes Then Goes and River Cross. Those are firmly in my 'Everybody Hurts' category of songs where if I catch them in the right frame of mind they are incredibly powerful, but they are very much songs tied to a particular head space I need to want to be in to fully appreciate. Pearl Jam's more aggressive songs are always anytime/anyplace for me, so that edges Dark Matter up.
I think what's keeping Dark Matter out of the upper echelon for me is the bridge. It's an okay bridge (good solo, though). I'd either need the solo to go a little longer or for the bridge music to feel a bit more like a departure. I do like the 'slam into a brick wall' ending.

What I hear of Jeff sounds amazing. And I'm sure the bass is influencing how I hear the rest of the song. But the moments that come through when there are some lulls in the music or the volume softens is so good I want more of it.
This has definitely been a headphones song. Tiny flourishes and moments everywhere on what is otherwise a very straightforward package

Veering off-topic for just a second… There are a few Gigaton to Yield comparisons in the previous pages (which I love!).
Have felt like Giga is the closest they’ve come to that flow or feeling since Yield. There were instant connections that first month of listening. Something about the sequence.
Some were comparing Buckle Up to Wishlist. For my $, I think Alright is more in line with WL while Buckle Up is more in line with LowLight.

Gigaton was the perfect record for me during that time, especially considering what was going on globally. That said, many of the tracks didn’t age as well as I would have thought. DoTC, Wes, 7, and Retro have stood the test of time for me. QE grew on me. The rest just don’t get into my rotation much.
While DM isn’t perfect, to me it already belongs in the conversation of the aforementioned tracks. Maybe not equal to dance. But not too far below.

I would personally change the placement of a few songs (I even prefer TTLW over SBW), but otherwise there is a lot to agree on there, including the placement for DOTC and DM.
