Re: Feminism
Not sure where to put this, but I thought it wouldn't be that popular in any of the football threads.
While I was watching some of the early games today I decided to crunch some demographics on sideline reporters in both college football and the NFL. Here were the results I came up with:
--87% of sideline reporters are female, compared to 47% of the workforce.
--The median age of sideline reporters is 34.5 years (39 for males and 32 for females). For the nation's workforce, it's 41.9 total, with 41.8 for males and 42.1 for females.
--47.8% of sideline reporters have blond hair. The general population numbers on this was more difficult to track down, but this article says "Just 1 in 20 white American adults is naturally blonde, [...] Virtually 1 in 3 white adult females dye their hair a shade of blonde."
Put it all together, and 37% of sideline reporters are blond, female, and under the age of 40. I know, not that surprising...

Re: Feminism
Positives for the US from the 2014 Gender Gap Index.
- We scored .83 (1.0 equating to total gender equality) for economic participation. Because of the way the numbers are calculated, the fact that women make up 2/3 of the part time workforce and have larger stay-at-home numbers could represent a good-sized chunk of that gap.
- Women currently make up 55% of the professional and technical workforce.
- Women outpaced men for educational attainment and literacy levels in the 2013-2014 period, and represented a disproportionate percentage of workplace promotions.
- Estimated earned income equal

modding happening
Is there a thread were people are talking about that woman recording herself walking down the street in New York?

Also, along a similar vein of misogyny, is there a threat talking about the Rolling Stone article about that gang rape at UVA?
I'll let Nick moderate this is necessary.

Probably not the two best stories to reference. The video of the woman walking down the street in New York was deemed racist as it only showed two white people saying anything to her.B wrote:Is there a thread were people are talking about that woman recording herself walking down the street in New York?

The RS story regarding UVA is getting slammed currently due to the complete lack of fact checking done by the writer, not even bothering to reach out to the unnamed accused for their side of the story or any comment.
Both are very valid issues that should be corrected but the stories you mention do not portray the issues accurately or do the issues justice for the mentioned reasons.

To Our Readers:
Last month, Rolling Stone published a story titled "A Rape on Campus" by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, which described a brutal gang rape of a woman named Jackie at a University of Virginia fraternity house; the university's failure to respond to this alleged assault – and the school's troubling history of indifference to many other instances of alleged sexual assaults. The story generated worldwide headlines and much soul-searching at UVA. University president Teresa Sullivan promised a full investigation and also to examine the way the school responds to sexual assault allegations.
Because of the sensitive nature of Jackie's story, we decided to honor her request not to contact the man she claimed orchestrated the attack on her nor any of the men she claimed participated in the attack for fear of retaliation against her. In the months Erdely spent reporting the story, Jackie neither said nor did anything that made Erdely, or Rolling Stone's editors and fact-checkers, question Jackie's credibility. Her friends and rape activists on campus strongly supported Jackie's account. She had spoken of the assault in campus forums. We reached out to both the local branch and the national leadership of the fraternity where Jackie said she was attacked. They responded that they couldn't confirm or deny her story but had concerns about the evidence.
In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story.

Re: modding happening
Thing I don't get is there's more than enough rape stories that finding a true story wouldn't have been hard and a less horrific one would have kept the story about how UVA admin has reacted to reported assaults in the past. That should have been the focus of the story. It wouldn't have been as glamorous or headline grabbing but RS has hung the source Jackie out to dry. This would have been mitigated with the least amount of journalistic integrity and ethic.Fuck You Jobu wrote:I like how they refuse to even accept blame for such shoddy journalism, but rather it was all on the source...Green Habit wrote:http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/new ... s-20141205surfndestroy wrote:The RS story regarding UVA is getting slammed currently due to the complete lack of fact checking done by the writer, not even bothering to reach out to the unnamed accused for their side of the story or any comment.

Erdely on the craft of magazine writing, discussing an earlier story on a high school student who had sex with a teacher:
Sabrina had two months of false starts while looking for a good “character,” a must for all nonfiction narratives. She was looking for a semirecent case in which the teacher was convicted of something.
“Also one of the qualifications was that the teacher be hot,” Sabrina admitted. “You want the readers to kind of understand the chemistry between them.”
