If you start with low-end plastic turntables you might end up being frustrated or turned-off. The better thing to do is to buy a vintage deck of a good name (Technics, Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz) that holds it's value in case you give up and want to sell it. I strongly suggest getting on your local craigslist or ebay and look for something like this;

Marantz 6100 - recent sale on ebay went for $125

would prefer to have a box that is mobile, and not a cabinet.

Music on Vinyl is a European (Dutch?) label that basically only does represses. I've got their Into The Wild and it sounds great!

i'm currently mucking around with my father's old 70s pioneer turntable and receiver. found the missing speaker connectors for the receiver on ebay, but can't get the turntable working - seems to be dead.

Any of you guys have a Technics SL-1200? How much did you pay for it? What's a good deal for a table that's got some cosmetic wear and needs a new stylus/headshell? I'm just trolling eBay looking at them, and the prices have a pretty big range, so I was just checking.

I paid about $500 for a gently used, gorgeous, black 1200. That included a technics headshell and grado gold. I got mine from KAB (http://www.kabusa.com/frameset.htm?/) in New Jersey, and have ZERO complaints. Save another disaster or a sudden windfall of cash, I have a feeling it will be the last deck I'll ever need.

The thing with the 12s that you have to be mindful of, is making sure it's not from a failed DJ who wrecked the motor pretending to be Gradmaster Caz or something. Guitar Center usually has loads of them used on the cheap, but God knows their past lives.

Any comments on that cart vs others that you've had? It seems to get a lot of rave reviews on AK.

After switching to the Denon 110 I've gone into a bit of an upgrading spiral. I'm about to pull the trigger on some B&W speakers that I found through my local CL. It's my christmas gift to myself:

Current setup is the Rega P3 with Denon Dl-110 Cart and freshly rewired RB300 tonearm using ISOkinetik wire, running through a McIntosh C28 Preamp and MC2505 amplifier with the new B&W DM602 S2 speakers that I picked up last week. I've been in pure audio heaven for the last 5 days!
