I've listened to this a few times over the weekend. It feels like collection for us hardcore fans. They've done these kinds of releases several times now (SYR Series, a lot of Destroyed Room, Spinhead Sessions...) and every time they do, I tell myself that this is the kind of SY we need more of. I don't know that I fully agree with that anymore, but I'm never going to turn down the opportunity to hear these types of sketches. Social Static is a standout for me, simply because I could live in that '99-'02 Jim O'Rourke era forever. It's the least digestible thing on this collection, but I continue to be amazed at how this band can weave chaos and noise into something coherent.

Basement Contender is very nice too. For all the VU comparisons bands like SY and other indie cohorts get, I've never really heard that much in SY's music that actually sounds like it could be a Velvets jam. This one does. The lo-fi recording helps with that, and the groove itself is just unmistakably influenced. It would be very cool to have a full collection of instrumentals from this session, if they exist.

I'm going to listen to this album a few more times this week and then I'm sure I'll revisit it and think it's great all over again months from now. Hope we see more stuff like this from these guys, but I don't think there's anything essential on here.
Any more takers on this yet?

i would listen to more of this version of SY.

Anything recorded by Wharton Tiers or involving Jim O'Rourke is probably a good place to start. I sing the praises of the SYR series often on this board, and for good reason. It's the loosest SY material you've never heard.

This is a great show, but:

a) it's been part of their official bootleg series for years as a straight soundboard recording; and

b) I think the new mix from the multi-tracks sounds worse somehow (at least from the samples I've heard).

I mean I’m sure it’s very good or great but the overall vibe from those shows was really weird.

Also I didn’t liked seeing Mark there playing with them.

They play some great old tunes they hadn't played for years at that point, so it's definitely worth hearing.

This NPR oral history piece is a good read:

https://www.npr.org/2023/08/16/11938767 ... al-history

As noted above, the new mix sounds worse (to me) than the original Bandcamp/Nugs release of the show.

The old version remains available at Nugs for discerning listeners:

Listened to the first three tracks and its good...the band seems very locked in and Kim sounds very engaged, which is surprising because i remember this tour as being so weird and cold, specially having seen live their show in Buenos Aires.

I remember reading Kim´s book about this tour, and she pictured a very hard moment for her, with Thurston being relieved with their split and she still spinning in circles.

This show happened before Thurston and Kim split, though, so it’s quite a different vibe to the later South American shows.
