I've found that there's really no telling when any given component of a song is going to pop out and register with me in some significant way, positive or negative. "Music" and "lyrics" are too reductive a means of analyzing music for me -- "music" encompasses a plethora of individual components in and of itself (rhythm, dynamic, the timbre of each instrument), as do "lyrics" (the meanings of the words, the phonetic effect of the rhymes, subtler things like phrasing and inflection), each of these things perfectly capable of succeeding or failing on its own terms. I think most of the time the music vs. lyrics debate is really a "gut reaction" vs. "analysis" debate, as the primary argument against the lyrics-first camp always seems to be that they care too much about something they shouldn't care about, which is silly. Everything that's a part of the music is there for consumption, and some folks are just sensitive to certain ingredients. It's part of what makes the glorious tapestry of music appreciation such a joy.

It's been true for a long time now but I'd like to officially go on record as saying that Kevin Davis is RM's greatest asset.

Again, I think HWIC is far more interesting and successful. It's a song genuinely enjoy listening to and get a lot out of.

Don't get me wrong guys, I adore the song. I'm not sure I'd put it in their top 25 or anything but it's a really fun song. But when you put the qualifier on it, it rockets up into the top 3.

My friend 'Bret' and I were at a Decemberists concert in Lawrence KS a few years back. Colin Meloy was prepping the audience on how to react during The Mariner's Revenge song. They had a cardboard whale and they wanted the audience to scream as if being chewed to death by the whale. My friend, 'Bret' yelled out "WHALES DON'T HAVE TEETH."

That shut Colin Meloy right up, I'll tell you. And when the time came to sing the lyric, "I must have slipped between its teeth" Colin mumbled and glared at my friend.

It was amazing and to this day remains my favorite story about whales.
