The problem though is actually getting people to come forward on those stories.

That wasn't a problem for the story. The writer found lots of victims willing to share their story but the writer went rape story shopping until she found one just sensational enough for her. But as a whole for society, I agree.
Jameis Winston wrote:Rape is a vicious crime. The only thing as vicious as rape is falsely accusing someone of rape.
A crazy person accusing me of raping them is fucking terrible. But you know what it's not as terrible as? Some dude shoving his cock inside my body without my consent.

If the accusation results in a felony conviction it is probably worse.

But that's nowhere near the consequences that Winston is facing in this hearing.

You're honestly trying to tell me that the act of saying that somebody raped you when they didn't is arguably worse than fucking someone against their will? Honestly?
You really don't see how fucked up that sounds?

In addition to potentially ruining somebody's life, the false claim also makes you a big part of the reason it's as hard as it is to convict rapists. So I suppose you are helping to ensure that actual rape isn't prosecuted enough.
But I would bet that most false claims are just like this one…falsely made to the public, not to the police.

On a different note, I have to shake my head at how absurd this advertising campaign is. I'd say that the costume designs make no sense, but of course it depends on what your definition of "sense" is.

I feel like a false conviction of rape would wreck a person's life worse than a rape would, but I don't know what I base that on.

Again, Winston said "falsely accusing", not "falsely convicting".

this whole line of conversation leaves a lot to be desired...
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have included it in a thread focused on discussions about feminism. most especially this particular thread seeing its history, but whatever. I don't care, just making an observation

Since the feds made college sexual assault a title IX issue, it seems unfortunately to fall under the title of 'feminism'. Seems like a less than ideal approach, but hey, its the feds.

I'm surprised you haven't heard of this. The feds issued a memo, along with several campus investigations that have led to the lower standard of proof for campus adjudicated sexual assault hearings. http://www.campussafetymagazine.com/art ... ess-Effort
If I am somehow off base, let me know, but this is consistent with what I've read several places.
