Did we get some set recycling? That path to the vale looked a lot like the valley that the wildlings met up with the Thenns. P cool to see the Bloody Gate even though it wasn't there when Catelyn took Tyrion. Really makes you feel for the season 1 budget constraints

I took it like they were slipping in the backdoor, since Littlefinger mentioned staying away from a better watched path.

Littlefinger wanted to pit the Starks vs. the Lannisters to put the realm into war so that he could find a way to gain power out of it. I'm not sure if it was out of love for Catelyn that he did it, but he got Lysa to poison her husband Jon Arryn. This is what caused Robert to ask Ned to become his Hand of the King. Lysa did this because she is in love with Littlefinger (Remember, he was around Riverrun, the home of Catelyn Stark and Lysa Arryn).

I still question a lot of this as something that was put into the story after the fact to create a twist. It was largely believed that Ser Hugh of the Vale poisoned Jon Arryn on the orders of the Lannisters because he was getting close to knowing about Joffrey being a bastard. One of the first scenes of the show is Cersei and Jamie talking over his corpse hinting at their involvement. Why else would they make Jon's squire a knight?

Last time Tyrion was involved in a trial by combat, he requested Jaime and ended up with Bronn. Does he have either of those options again and if so, will he opt for the one-handed Jaime, and would Jaime even accept the call?
