Sounds like Belechick saw some tape of a LB from Rutgers who he thinks is going to be available in the 3rd round next year.

Collins trade is bizarre. Seems like the FO must have really soured on him in the last year or so. He was on his was to becoming one of the best players on their team after that great postseason run.

Nobody sells high better than Bill Belichick. I actually think this is far riskier for Cleveland, they could either get stuck overpaying him or letting him walk after half a season.

That makes sense. Cleveland has so many picks they can probably waste one trying to see if he'll sign an extension. They can definitely afford to pay him. I just looked it up and he's already 27, probably another reason the hoodie wasn't willing to shell out a ton.

I get that Bill was never gonna pay him that amount. But, why ship him off for a comp pick when you'll get one when he leaves?
I just think the moves makes you worse in the short term. There has to be more to it than just $$.

Wow, Pats are a 7 1/2 point fav Sunday night vs. Seattle. Tempting to take the Seahawks and points, but really hard to bet against NE beating the spread. Crowd should be really juiced up, lots of taunting. Should be fun.

They can afford to pay him, but they overpay him (of which they definitely will if they use the franchise tag), they're going to earn a reputation for overpaying that can get them in trouble in the long run.

In order to get a comp pick when he left, the Pats would have had to resist signing unrestricted free agents of their own to avoid canceling out losing Collins. It's always better to get a guaranteed draft pick now if you can rather than playing the comp pick game for a pick that would come a year later.
