In all seriousness, my initial reaction to Cold Confession has been more positive than anything I've heard from the band on at least the last two albums. I just don't see why the reaction has to be one of such fierce negativity towards the rest of the modern stuff as opposed to simply enjoying the new songs you claim to love.

These were released by accident, and our favourite band's fan club is clamping down on them and taking them off the Internet for fear that their presence in the world will hurt sales of Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt contains a song which is good (released after a pointless week-long countdown), another which is embarrassing but endearing if you close your eyes and push (LB), and a pretty cute but ultimately forgettable little acoustic piece of romantic schlock. This is what they deliberately decide to release to their 'fans', instead of their truly interesting material which they still write, but they discard.

Now remind me, what is there to 'love'?

What is embarrassing about Lightning Bolt? I don't like it all that much, but embarrassing?

OK. Since you're not going to jump on me: the chorus is cringe-worthy, which I may or may not get over with the studio version. And the fact the title of this song is also the title of the album, and while it's an OK song, it seems to be anything but worthy of a title track. But then, maybe S/T was a precedent, because that album was in no way worthy of carrying the name 'Pearl Jam' and being truly representative of the band.

My 'embarrassing' comment was over the top and it's because I was riled. I haven't really been disastrously negative about LB, on the whole. But in general I feel it's going to be one of many that I'm going to 1) spend time trying to let grow on me, and 2) have trouble recommending to friends if I want to explain why I love this band. That's where the embarrassment comes in; they can't expect their fans to be proud advocates of their music if it's going to be like this.

I actually have fairly high expectations for the studio version of lightning bolt precisely because, for the first time ever, they actually named an album after a song.

Of course I could end up getting totally let down.

Yup. They are definitely songs we enjoy because we have them, and because they are by Pearl Jam. But if we felt they were essential, we'd be aching to 'spread the jam'. As it is, we'll stick these on our MP3 players and privately rock out, and when people ask us what we're playing, we'll show them Cold Concession or Let It Ride.

I've been trying to think of scenarios in which Lightning Bolt might be a good title. But it will depend on hearing the songs.

Interesting that after all this time, they have a title track for a record now. Would be interesting to go back through and see what songs would make the best titles for their respective records.

I think Last Exit, Present Tense, Low Light, and All or None could have worked for their records at least.

I still think WWS is great and don't get the general dislike for it.
The Fixer is a tough one though.

I just listened to that 6 track S/T demo thing, and although I spotted plenty of nice sound differences (MOAR COWBELL on Unemployable) I found them to be generally dull as dishwater. WWS and Unemployable definite standouts.
