But in the case of Louis Ck, whose work I love, I still consume the art. I just accept that I’m making a moral compromise any time I pay for his art.
So you DO separate them then.

There's being an asshole and then there's kicking a woman in the face.

I also love his music, but jesus christ. Just... what the hell.

dad wrote:are you able to separate the art from the artist? i personally know a few people who will still listen to ryan adams, including my wife sometimes. he's had struggles with addiction, but also is a dirtbag. same with mark kozelek, although i don't know he's an addict.

anyway, i won't stop my wife or anyone around me, for that matter, if they played an artist who's dirtbaggery has overshadowed their art.

i used to like and purchase music made by ducktails' matt mondanile, also formerly of real estate. i really enjoyed his ducktails stuff. after the allegations came out, and he doubled down on his accusers and got dropped by domino, i stopped listening. same thing with kozelek. i'm sure there are artists i listen to currently who could one day be exposed as dirtbags as well. i mean, who knows what those other guys were thinking about when writing the songs i came to love?

i've seen some folks here post in the ryan adams thread, mostly discussing his continuous decline.

does anyone else have an issue separating the two?
Depends - If I liked and actively listened to/watched said artist falsly accused of of being a prick - it doesn't really alter my listening/watching habbits, but if I know someone's a prick before having a formed an opinion I tend to stay away from thier work

i hear ya, and false accusations are detrimental to both sides. the artists i've mentioned and have chosen to steer clear of, are ones who've had multiple accusers, and all three of these guys were total dicks about it.

I separate artist from person. Don’t really care that much bout what they do or did; specially the latter.

So yeah different things for me.

I always forget State of Shock is a Michael Jackson song. I think growing up with the Weird Al polka version created a false memory of a different, more rollicking original version that never existed.

I often associate bands with certain types of weather - a easy summer day is just great to listen to the Grateful Dead. Right now in New York, it’s hot as hell. Swamp ass hot. There are really two bands that cut it for me in this heat - Credence Clearwater Revival and the Allman Brothers Band. Hence, the Allmans journey.

Disappointed in RM for not letting me know about A Place to Bury Strangers sooner.

It's not our fault that you don't read psychobain's posts.

If anything, I think RM was quietly, but collectively cautious about introducing Burt to a band called “a place to bury strangers”
