Binaural <> Riot Act
Gigaton
Backspacer
S/T
Lightning Bolt
Binaural and Riot Act are interchangeable for me, depends on my mood. Recently I’ve been more into Riot Act.
As an album, Backspacer is more complete and consistent in quality than S/T. S/T has the higher highs though. There are more 5 star songs on S/T for me (Life Wasted, Parachutes, Come Back, Army Reserve), but also more songs that I do not care for at all (WWS, Gone, Comatose, Big Wave).

The more time goes by the clearer it becomes that S/T is much closer in quality to Backspacer/Lighting Bolt than it is to Riot Act or Gigaton.

S/T is the only top tier album that PJ have released post-Yield, for me. Even with the shitty production.
A lot of Binaural is outstanding; side one of Riot Act is outstanding; Gigaton is consistently good but not great. But S/T is pure gold. But I appreciate (and embrace the fact) that I stand alone on this.

As I barrel through the Ape/Man shows in the Binaural tour, I couldn’t disagree more. I already loved the album, but this has reopened my senses to how great Binaural was, even if very few actually noticed.

I'm rarely very hot-takey, but this one came to me while reading this thread, and it was so freeing to just say it!wease wrote:So very much the wrong take.Jaeti wrote:The more time goes by the clearer it becomes that S/T is much closer in quality to Backspacer/Lighting Bolt than it is to Riot Act or Gigaton.

Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
listening to this now
it's grown on me whenever I've revisited it over the last year or so, it's really solid; and I always liked WWS, you bitches; from any other band it would be a top tier album, but the bar was in space at the time it was released, so I unfairly maligned it
my biggest complaint is Ed being *so* scratchy high register in the first three songs, like he's trying to channel AC/DC -- it's something I tolerate fine but... the (brilliant) bridge of "Life Wasted" and "Severed Hand" are a welcome break from this (if I had to point to a song on here that seemed to be a brighter Riot Act-type cut, it might be Severed Hand... and the outro is fantastic)
"Marker in the Sand" is so underrated
it's nice to say I really like 9 out of 11 Pearl Jam albums instead of the 7 I used to

This has been my favorite S/T tune since day one and it always surprises me how people say the chorus is weak -- I think it's beautiful, redemptive, fulfilling, uplifting, any positive adjective like that I can throw at it. I love the way it just completely deflates the tension and fury of the verses. Such a great tune.Ms Harmless wrote:"Marker in the Sand" is so underrated
The songs on this album have aged really well for me but I overwhelmingly prefer the live versions. The record itself is probably the one I find myself going back to least.

usually I'd rather listen to anything in studio over live stuff (unless I'm at a gig) but I went to Reading Festival 2006 and they were excellent, S/T songs and allKevin Davis wrote:This has been my favorite S/T tune since day one and it always surprises me how people say the chorus is weak -- I think it's beautiful, redemptive, fulfilling, uplifting, any positive adjective like that I can throw at it. Re: Pearl Jam (self titled): Official Album Thread
Reading 2006 is a great boot, i love all that tour but that one is special.
About Marker....while i do like when i listen to it, its not a song i choose. I would say my classics from this album are LW, WWS, Comatose, Severed Hand, Unemployable, Army Reserve and Inside Job.
