i always thought gigaton was more comparable to no code, so if we get something comparable to yield this is going to be amazing. what was the first single off of yield? given to fly? i'm not going to compare Dark Matter to GTF, but Dark Matter is much more radio friendly than the lead single from the last album.

My best friend and I have been die hards since day 1 all the way to today, and while we liked Gigaton, Dance of the Clairvoyants is a bathroom break at a show and absolutely skippable.
Of course Dark Matter is radio friendly or at least it’s something someone could expect from PJ but I do believe the next single will be more a crossover intent; we’ll see if it’s a ballad or a power ballad maybe?

I'll bet the next single is one of the two Petty-inspired tracks and the third, if they put one out, is the Daddy ballad.

Yeah, I don't really get it either. I don't hate it like you do, I mean it's fine I guess. But I thought QE was more of a second coming than DOC. With DOC I was just like, eh, that's different, cool... next...

Ok, so…I think I’m mostly very happy with this song.
It has qualities that I would have disliked greatly in 1999. But I’m not stuck back there…if anything, I find 1999 me to be pretty lame in retrospect.
I agree that the production feels competitively smooshed and a bit claustrophobic, and while I think that works for this song…I imagine the overall record will suffer from it the way Earthling did.
But I didn’t really care about that on Earthling, either, because it had a bunch of songs and performances that affected me. That’s what music is, first and last.
I like that the band sounds like a band again. I like that it doesn’t feel like they are guesting on each other’s songs so much. I think the sprawling performances on Gigaton probably helped give that record some of this feeling, too…Ed might have written Superblood Wolfmoon alone, but the final version is so inconcise and so influenced by the actual playing that it doesn’t feel creatively insular, the way the songs they bring in sometimes do. Same with Never Destination.
Here, they capture that togetherness in a tighter, purer way, and I am glad to have it.
I like that Ed is channeling the moment again, rather than showing off or trying to control every moment of his delivery. I won’t rehash what I’ve said before about why I think that, in contexts like this or most of Gigaton, his old man voice is far more interesting to me than his young one would have been, but I will say that I find the incredibly repetitious longing that goes on around here for a younger man’s singing to be both boring and kind of weird in its level of fixation.
The closest historical reference for this song, to me, is Good and Evil off of Earthling. So I assume this record will probably run a similar gamut of sounds, because both records are being guided by a producer who knows what he likes from this band and has already largely expressed them in that project.
I am hopeful that this record will be comprised of songs of approximately this caliber. And if it does, that will be two Pearl Jam records in a row that I liked. That’s pretty good.

Pearl Jam & Talking Heads are both foundational bands for me. Smash 'em together, sprinkle in a little post-coital sweat, and, well, I never really stood a chance.
Really think it helps to have the TH frame of reference pre-established for this one.

Yeah this coming of from Gigaton also kinda helps maybe, because I love that album and im both exited and confident that I’ll love the new one too, specially after the release of the single.
