I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I watched The Graduate today and now I understand about 10% more Simpsons jokes.

I haven't had a movie-watching experience like this since watching Citizen Kane a few years ago; this movie has seeped into so many different corners of pop culture that it was almost like watching a loose adaptation of a book I've read--everything was eerily familiar.

On its own merits, of course, it's a great film. I was struck by two things: how early and how quick the iconic "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me line" line and the corresponding shot through her leg comes into play; the film doesn't dwell on it, and I'm shocked how often it gets misquoted (as a question instead of a statement). It's also great how erotic the film can be with zero real sex scenes and about .25 seconds of nudity; everything is implied, and the tension builds in an awkward, start-and-stop way that's perfect for the subject matter.

"I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends."

"He certainly is a good walker." :haha:

if we're going to play this game:

There Will Be Blood
The Master
Boogie Nights
Magnolia
Punch-Drunk Love
Inherent Vice
Sydney

(The line between 1 and 2 on that list is razor thin, btw)

Cool. Then you can probably skip Magnolia for now. You should definitely see it eventually. It's another movie you'll really appreciate for the performances, which are across the board outstanding. Everyone is great in it. But it's over 3 hours long and people don't always "get" it or like it what its saying even if they do "get" it. I adore it and it's still probably my favorite of PTA's movies. But I didn't really care for TWBB outside of DDL and Paul Dano.
I think Magnolia is PTA's strongest film by a fair margin. Ah hell, I'll just rank 'em:

Magnolia
Boogie Nights
Punch-Drunk Love
There Will Be Blood
Hard Eight (aka Sydney)
The Master
Inherent Vice
I'd go:

Magnolia
The Master
Punch-Drunk Love
There Will Be Blood
Hard Eight
Boogie Nights

Haven't seen Inherent Vice.

Those auditing scenes between PS Hoffman and Phoenix....lordy! That's, like, the definition of dialogue to me.

After watching The Graduate earlier (see above) I watched Cloverfield when the baby napped this afternoon. Because, you know, those movies go together.

It's funny because those scenes are essentially them doing a Meisner Exercise, which is basically an intense form of partner acting that people do in classes. I laughed out loud when they started doing it, and wondered if that was something that them and PTA came up with outside the scope of the original script. God, I fucking love that movie.

zoolander 2 - this was pretty much a complete retread of the first one, but i don't even care...i laughed a lot and was never bored

arlington road - the first hour or so isn't bad, but it starts to go downhill then the last 30 minutes are ridiculous...a few glaring plot holes plus terrible directorial decisions ruin it
