Guys, Dark Matter was pearl jam's biggest hit in like 20 years. Whether or not it is the most representative song to release, or the best, it clearly did what it was supposed to do

Upper Hand, WFS and Setting Sun are my initial favorites, but hearing them better just elevated all of them, so, who knows. And as others mentioned - I don’t necessarily care for Something Special, but as a dad of 3 kids those lyrics actually brought tears to my eyes.
Made me well up too “ my heart aches and breaks but I believe in you”. Being a parent and having to let go and let your kids pave their own way, knowing they will make mistakes. We can all relate to that

Was it? O_O What are the stats on this? It was actually successful? More than Just Breathe for example in 09?

I think Running benefits so much being part of the album. I just love the bridge and the ending when Ed screams “F@ck!!” Or whatever he is saying. I love it

Being release early did it a disservice I think

I don't adore the jam at the end of Upper Hand; I'd prefer it had returned to the intro, to make bookends, but oh well, I can live with it

it's been posted elsewhere in this thread. I don't have them to hand, sadly. It is possible something like Just Breathe may be bigger given the charts it shows up on. But DM was PJ's first number 1 hit on one of the charts since Given To Fly. They set a record for longest gap between number ones.

It does seem a bit unnecessary considering there's also a jam at the end of the next song.
