read that too. Lucas had a lot of 'great' ideas. Too bad they all didn't come about.

6) Han going back to being a smuggler. So his son turns evil, he and Leia separate, and he just goes back to smuggling? Seems beneath him, considering he was a general. Why not just take another position in the New Republic away from Leia?
One of the biggest reasons I'm repelled by the thought of this movie is that they felt they had to undo ALL of the victories from the original trilogy.
They beat the Empire! No they really didn't.
Luke faced the ultimate temptation, and is now a true Jedi who will bring light and hope to the galaxy. No he failed and skipped town, leaving everyone to their own, but he left a fucking treasure map because lol.
Han Solo grew as a person, found his conscience, and fell in love. Nah being a dad was hard and shit so he literally rejected all of it and went back to pirating.
It's like the fear of having to come up with new ideas was so great, that they had to dismantle the ending of a great story arc. The Han Solo story is now "he was a bit of a scumbag then was nice for a while then a scumbag again and then died." No thanks. I am perfectly content with keeping it at "they blew up the empire and lived happily ever after," for those characters.

I felt just the opposite. Really missed that Fox fanfare.
Me too, that for me was always one of the most chill bump inducing moments.
But it's not distributed by Fox anymore so I knew that wasn't going to be there this time. I would rather it have nothing than the silly Disney castle introduction beforehand.

This is the only one I'll quibble with; it's not surprising to me at all that there's a "remnant" left after the Empire ostensibly falls with the death of the Emperor, as there almost certainly would've been a bunch of lackeys jockeying for position and trying to climb the ladder with the power vacuum left behind. There's a fascinating story to be told about the difference between constituting and constituted power, but (1) I don't think Abrams can tell it and (2) I don't think the general audience is interested.

That's kinda what I'm feeling too. The more I think about this movie, the move I kinda wish I didn't see it. I was fine with the happy ending of ROTJ. I don't think I needed to see this story. Eh, I don't know, lots of mixed emotions with this flick. While it was enjoyable, it just didn't seem necessary, and yeah, it un-did all the effort that led up to the ROTJ ending. Maybe I didn't like this film. Can that be? Can I actually side with LV on this? NO!!!!!!!!!!!

This is great, spike. Thank you.
Also, Han SOlo is han solo even though he went back to smuggling. That doesnt ruin the character and what he accomplished in the first war. Not one bit. Also, he fucking goes back and helps bring down the new threat because he's han solo. Some of these gripes are lol and McP you haven't even seen the movie.

If anything, the Force Awakens makes me appreciate the ending of Return of the Jedi more. It's like the party when Obama got elected. Everyone was celebrating the victory, but the real work and difficulties were ahead.

1) Lack of politics. I didn't wan't taxations of trade routes or anything, but some of the history of the New Republic / Resistance, and the aftermath of the Empire / First Order would have been nice.
2) The planets of the New Republic blowing up. Similar to Alderan, and just like with that planet, we never get an emotional connection to it (one of the many things the prequels failed at IMO).
3) The general story being very much like ANH. While I liked the look / feel of the movie, it was a little too close to the ANH plot line for me. Would have rather seen a more ambitious plot, but not so ambitious that it doesn't make any sense (like the prequels).
4) Snope. He looked like Voldermort, and just really felt out of place. Also, how did he come to power after the Emperor? How did he convert Ben Solo to Kylo Ren? What the hell are the Knights of Ren? Why introduce that and not just have a new Sith Order?
5) How did Rey and Finn escape Jakku? I mean in ANH, when the Falcon bolts out of Mos Eisley, the Empire is hot on their heals. Why didn't they try to get the Falcon? Where was the pursuit?
6) Han going back to being a smuggler. So his son turns evil, he and Leia separate, and he just goes back to smuggling? Seems beneath him, considering he was a general. Why not just take another position in the New Republic away from Leia?
7) The Resistance. They mention the New Republic, so it exists, why is Leia's group know as the resistance? Why not just call it the New Republic? Why have two names for essentially the same thing?
That's all I can think of now, and I'll put together a list of things I did like. Overall, I liked the film, but I didn't love it.
relax, in 17 months, some of that will reveal itself
yeah, I'm not bothered at all by the lack of backstory on some things (though I will be if some things don't get expanded by the end).
I agree with 2. That felt flat.
The idea behind the resistance is that the republic doesn't want to be militarized, so Leia forms a splinter army kinda funded by the republic (like when the US supports local militaries, etc). Not saying it's a great idea (it's not) but that is the idea.

This is a pretty glib reading on all of this. It's worth having this discussion when you actually see the movie but:
1. The Empire spanned the whole galaxy. I read somewhere that they had 25k Star Destroyers. I'm perfectly fine with them going away, retrenching/rebranding, and returning. It's a pretty accurate mirror of real politics.
2. I am fine with Luke having a crisis of faith after the nephew he was training slaughters all his students. I can certainly see that make me want to give up teaching.
The map stuff is something I presume will be explained. I THINK (if Luke is the guy who hides Ray on Jakku) that the map is there to reunite the two of them when she's older, can be kept safer, something we'll see in the movie.
Right now the map idea is hard to judge. There are reasonable payoffs but there are certainly stupid directions we can go in.
3. I think it is a lot more realistic that Han and Leia's relationship was not likely to be successful in the long term, especially after their son becomes a genocidal maniac. People have gotten divorced for less...

If you don't want the return of the jedi story to continue then it makes sense you'll have issues with this next chapter. It does undo the happy ending.
