What were the five best songs you (re)discovered during this tournament

Hello Kitty Kat
Where the River Goes
River of Deceit
Gish (entire)/Bootcamp/Nevermind (entire)

Crackerman and Hello Kitty Kat were both songs that were completely off my radar that I have been listening to constantly since this whole thing started.


Where the River Goes was another song I had forgotten about that I've been into, though not nearly to the extent of those first two.

River of Deceit was a personal favorite I hadn't taken the time to listen to in YEARS. Man that song holds up


I can't decide on a fifth. I was pleasantly surprised at just how amazing Nevermind still is, after ignoring it for years. While of course not nearly as good, Gish is an album that I need to spend more time with. There's a lot of worthwhile proto-siamese dream there worth exploring. And Bootcamp was another song I wasn't really that familiar with (I usually just listened to the A-side of DOTU.

I don't know about 5 particular songs, but it made me feel a fondness for Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins that I haven't felt in a long time.

Not to be melodramatic, but Kurt's suicide really soured me on their music. It always had that dark cloud hanging over it and I could rarely just sit and enjoy the musicianship, craftsmanship, lyrics, etc. With distance and judging those songs against others of their time, it's allowed me to appreciate stuff like All Apologies without thinking of news clips blaring out his suicide.

And Smashing Pumpkins really achieved a sound that was completely unlike anyone during this time period. I certainly have my problems with them, mostly beginning and ending with Corgan, but stuff like Cherub Rock and Drown and Rhinoceros were just next level.

"Crackerman" is a wonderful song -- one of the handful of songs on "Core" that kicks that "grunge also-rans" stereotype in the ass, adding a swagger and gallop that they sure as hell didn't steal from AIC or Soundgarden.

Probably some STP songs I found out I really like.

Glynis

I had 3 new discoveries - Hello Kitty Kat by SP, Real Thing by AiC and Trippin on a Hole... by STP.

My rediscoveries include Crackerman and Lounge Act.

Mostly that I like Smashing Pumpkins way better than these other bands. I think I already knew that but this was a solid reminder.

I know these bands Discography's in and out so there were no surprises but I've been over the Pumpkins for years and this reminded me that they were pretty great for a while there.

Purple is a great goddamn record. That's #1.

I've always loved it. But man that fucker really holds up. It's somehow even better than I remember. I need to add that to my top albums of all time list.

It's been a while since I listened to that guy, too. But I LOVE that record. I had it ranked in the #2 STP slot for a while.

It reminded me of No Code when it dropped, in that most of my friends really didn't like it, but I couldn't stop listening to it. I was hooked from first listen.

I wasn't an immediate fan. It took me until years later to really listen to it. After Scott died I was listening again and something just clicked for me and I fell completely in love with Shangri-La. It's super underrated and really wonderful. Purple might have higher highs but Shangri-La is much more diverse. Both albums are amongst my favorites.

Shangri La Dee Da sounded a million times better the first time I heard Stone Temple Pilots' reunion album.

I've listened to all these bands a lot over the years. Not easy to find something new from this period.

Albums that are back in rotation:
1. Purple
2. Siamese Dream
3. Dirt
4. Above

Especially Purple has gone into heavy rotation. Like No Code and Jar Of Flies, it holds up better every year.
