at some point I downloaded that 4 string quartet pearl jam album. Most of it is exactly what you'd expect, but once is actually pretty cool (so is last exit)

Not one of my favorites on Ten, however, I love hearing the raw energy with Dave A. behind the kit from the early live days. I really started to dislike this song after hearing versions from the 2000 tour. It felt neutered and boring.

For my money, one of PJ's absolute best. Have always loved the fuck outta this song.

I still really like Once but will admit it has not aged as well as some other early songs.

once is one of those songs that works well live because of the audience interaction but will not translate well to a boot

For real. This is probably one of my top 10 PJ songs.

It was - this really was a beast of a song (well, it still is). But, it just has a very dated sound now.

"Dated" isn't really a criticism.

The Master/Slave into to Once to me doesn't sound dated at all. The rest of the song, sure, but that doesn't matter. It rocks. It's fun. Still gets the juices going on a long car ride or workout for me.

I may be in the minority, but when I spin Once, I tend to gravitate towards the Ten Redux version. The drums stand out a bit more and give the song more of a pop that (I think) it needs.

I'm with you. The BoB remix on RVM is even better. Those are the definitive versions of Once, Black, and especially Alive--as far as I'm concerned.
It's just too bad that once doesn't have the Master/Slave intro
