2018 50/50 Challenge - 50 Books & 50 Movies in One Year

Post by bune »

Some guidelines:

1) Um…What happens if I don’t read 50 books and watch 50 movies this year?
Easy: we send a bounty hunter to your house. Actually, there is no punishment (not this year, anyhow). It’s your personal challenge, so all we ask is that you try. No matter what, you’ll probably consume more books/movies than you’ve ever done before. This, my friends, is what we call win-win.

2) Do I have to read the books, or can I just skim?
I can see how this would be confusing. Oh wait, no. C’mon people, it’s a reading challenge! Same as fast-forwarding through a movie isn’t the same as really watching one, this is about taking the time to really enjoy. For the avoidance of doubt, please read the book for it count.

3) Do long books count as 2? What about movies?
If your book is over 500 pages, you can count it as two books if you like. We still consider you an Overachiever. However, if the book is 2,000 pages, it’s still just two books — not four! We want to encourage you to read longer pieces. This answer has been posted for the benefit of all you Game of Thrones fanatics out there. Go forth and prosper or whatever it is. No matter the length, a movie is still just a (one, 1, “ONE”) movie. That said, installments in a movie series (example: the individual Godfather movies) would each snag an individual point. Go you.

4) Can I rewatch/reread?
Of course you can rewatch and reread… it just won’t count towards your 50/50!

5) What should I read/watch?
Anything you like!

There are more rules but they're specific for the blog I copied them from. Also they're stupid so I'm not going to go into them here.

The only thing that I would want to add to this is that everyone gets to make a recommendation for a required reading and viewing for the year. Something that you really enjoyed and want to experience with others and maybe generate some discussion. I see too many of these threads just turn into "I read these books/watched these movies" postings at the end of the month and that's boring.

My 2017 result was 215 books and ~300 movies; I was done with the challenge before March. This year I'm not counting graphic novels or books that I read with my son though.

I like this idea but wouldn't be able to get to a movie theater 50 times this year, or probably any year seeing how a movie ticket costs about the same as a small down payment on a house, does stuff on netflix count? Although I'd guess that would exclude binge watching series...
anyway good idea

Theater/DVD/Blu-Ray/streaming/carrier pigeon. If it's new to you, count it.

I'll try but 25/25 seems more realistic for me. I do want to start watching more movies again. I used to devour them like LV once upon a time.

I'll be lucky to see 10 movies or read more than 10 books. Power to those who can however.

Audiobooks when I'm on my bike and lots of ebooks when I'm on the bus. It's roughly an hour either way so that's two hours of 'reading' a day. When I'm doing chores around the house I either listen to podcasts or books.

After our son goes to bed, my wife and I usually just sit and read for about an hour or so and then go to bed. Me, I gotta wake up early and she's on the pain meds so she sleeps a lot.

If I read for more than 5 second in a moving vehicle I will puke everywhere.

I have no idea how a human could possibly read 200 + books in one year.

Two things:

A) Just because they're in Goodreads doesn't mean it's a proper book; at the end of the day it's just a number that says "these things are in our database".

B) A cursory count puts me over 100 books that I wouldn't count this year: 78 graphic novels, 13 Star Wars books, and 17 that I read with my son.

Interspersed in there are three David Foster Wallace books, some non-fiction, some classics, and a lot of weird shit that just caught my eye at the library.

I am trying to catch up on some TV now, but I think I will try with movies. Books will be hard.

I don't understand this. At all. I mean, I have read a book in one day, I think, three times in my life that I can remember. But they were all really short easy reads. Like Bridge to Terabithia and Coma by Alex Garland. And with each, I never set out to read them in one day.

Eh, everyone reads differently. I remember in high school I was on a Dean Koontz / Stephen King kick and I read several of their books in a day. Phantoms comes to mind, also the Dark Tower books.

Speaking of DT, I read a version of it that I haven't been able to find anywhere so at this point I'm pretty sure it was a fever dream that mixed Gunslinger with another book that was much more graphic.

This was all pretty heavy theory stuff, too. Learn the history of all of political theory and the broad sweep of American Political Development in two and a half years. But it was my job. Go to class, read, write papers about it. You were taking four classes that each assigned at least a book a week (sometimes several), plus the other things you read as part of research.

I'm a very fast reader, which helped.

I certainly couldn't do that today, with work, kids, etc.
