Flavored mayo is fine. The only time I will allow regular mayo is if it's a very small amount on a burger, and there have to be a lot of other toppings to drown it out.

If you dingbats aren't putting mayo on your BLT's or CLT's then you're doing it wrong and it breaks my heart that you'd voluntarily miss out on something so fundamentally wonderful and enriching.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it "needs" mayo... but such a sandwich is vastly improved by it, for sure. Mayo and mustard.

I like mustard as well, usually have three different ones in my fridge, but not for ham and cheese.
