Built to Spill
I love Built to Spill and Doug Martsch. I've seen them a few times, the last being April 2012 at Tipitinas in New Orleans. Good show, they played alot of material off There Is No Enemy, their last album plus a few of their better known songs like Carry the Zero and Else.
They are good enough live but do some excellent work in the studio. I love how layered their sound is. Brett Nelson does some excellent guitar work, especially with a slide. Anyone else?
This is a link to their song Strange off of Ancient Melodies of the Future. Excellent Fuzz and slide work in the song. Anyone else want to add to this?

I was thinking about trying to rank the B2S albums here but it's almost as tough as ranking PJ albums.

Re: Built to Spill
Well, TheDapperGent, I reminded you to check out the solo album by Jim James in the MMJ thread, and now you've reminded me that I've never heard the Doug Martsch solo album. I do remember it coming out, just didn't remember to listen.
I'd never even heard of BTS until my wife (who had been my girlfriend for only a month at the time) bought me You In Reverse when it came out. I listened to it 3 or 4 times on a 4 hour round trip to Providence, RI to see Wilco. I've been hooked ever since. And I've got to say, they're a really great live band, but their studio albums are untouchable.

I really really love You In Reverse. Ancient Melodies through There Is No Enemy just doesn't get the love that Perfect From Now On and Keep It Like a Secret get. All their albums are excellent!
I know they replaced the drummer and the bass player recently, so they have a new rythym section and they are supposed to be working on a new album!

Keep It Like A Secret is far and away my favorite
after that... There's Nothing Wrong With Love... then Perfect From Now On
probably would go You In Reverse and There Is No Enemy after that. Ancient was the first "disappointing" album in their catalog at the time it came out (Doug has since admitted he was a little disappointed with the album), but still has a ton of really good songs.

Re: Built to Spill
i'm in a BTS mood today
my wife had never listened to BTS before, and we saw them at the Sasquatch Festival a few years back. Prior to their set, I had filled her in on who they were, that they were great, etc etc. They were playing the main stage. And she hated them. To give her credit at the time, I was very underwhelmed as well. We were further back in the grass, and they just had zero translation in a venue that size.
Fast forward a couple of years, and we see them in a bar with about 1000 people, and she loved them. They just fit that smaller venue bill perfectly. Funny how a setting can change someone's thoughts of a band so drastically.

Man! That's a good setlist!
I've heard 2/3 of those songs live but that sequence looks tasty.

Hell yeah! I love Goin Against Your Mind! These lyrics are just awesome to me:lowlight79 wrote:I like this band, You in Reverse is my favorite record by them.
When I was a kid I saw a light
Floating high above the trees one night
What was an alien
Turned out to be just god
I still remember when I first heard that. Very creative and that's and excellent descriptor for these guys.

Liar is awesome. The guitar harmonizing in the bridge is beautiful. I got to see this one live and they did a really really good job on it.
