Eddie's best performance in studio?

Post by HalfFullofShit »

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier but I've been thinking a lot lately about this question considering CC. But what about Ed?

This is gonna get nerdy but that's why Im here! :) Im thinking in terms of one studio recording where you just feel like he really hits home. Delivery, feel, lyrics and melody whatever. Regardless what u think of the song generally.

Of the top of my head Faithful is one of those where I get goosebumps every now and then, especially during the intro and outro. And the other parts are pretty damn fine too. Just the right nasal tone and ambience mouthing throughout. The intro/outro vocal delivery is just so intimate and where others would've made it sound cheesy and forced, his voice just shines through with vulnerability and determination at the same time. The melody floats so balanced between his nasal tone and a more resonant one without loosing nerve. And the rest of the song's vocalizations just rhymes so right with the music...

I mean Faithful isn't really the song I would play to get someone hooked on the band, but surely a reminder for myself why I love this band whenever I hear the studio version.

Other performances that come to mind is Whipping (when he roars shoved...) and Save You (restrained and frustrated but really honest).

So, what are yours?

Not really really related to this topic, but that's an interesting video regarding Eddie voice range in studio:

(mods please move to "Pearl Jam Videos" topic if it feels more appropriate)

Yeah, definatley an example of where Ed is the main person of the song, and probably the only reason why I'd listen to it these days.

Smile and Light Years are really good ones! I can agree with Come Back, it's probably one of the last songs where you can feel he's chimed on to something within himself.

that song really suffered from being sped up live. it lost all of its nuance and tension.

Ed and Matt play like they just snorted a kilo of coke. Poor Jeff is over there just keeping up. Mike will shred to anything. And I'm not entirely sure Stone's guitar is even plugged in.

Yeah the "sped up" thing is definitely an Ed/Matt co-production.
