Red Mosquito

I've had an infatuation with collecting lightsabers over the past year. However, I really wanted to learn to build one myself. I'm terrible as a handyman, anything to do with electronics, really all things that encompass fixing or building things. This was something I just had to do for myself.

Mission accomplished this weekend!

Here are some pictures of what I built and a brief explanation of what it was and what it turned into.

Originally this saber was an empty hilt and the model was a Dominix v3. This is what it looked like originally.


It was sanded down, painted, did some dremel work to have it look battle scarred and weathered, etc.

I then decided to look into etching and discovered electro etching. Here's me practicing on a spoon, but this is the technique I used to etch the gold symbol at the top.


The electronics that were installed were a 3 diod LED, an illuminated AV switch, sound card, speaker, and then power supply.



You can see my soldering still needs work, but I think some thinner solder might help.


Lastly, I did a leather wrap on the handle and at this point I consider it done!

Also just for fun I threw in a pic of a Darksaber blade I ordered. It's supposed to look like Sabine's from Rebels. I absolutely love it.

My next build will have a crystal in it.
Actually, I'm currently paying a guy to do an install for me. It's a RotJ Luke saber (100% screen accurate), and he's doing a crystal reveal in it.

I keep saying one of these days I'm going to splurge and get one online. But like someone said earlier, even better if you make it yourself.

If anyone wants to buy the parts (I can make a list of what's needed) I'd assemble for free.
I'd just love the practice.

Also, if you buy the parts it's significantly cheaper than buying one online that's assembled.

So I did a a small tweak to the saber. I drilled a threaded hole just below where there was already one for the blade retention screws. I did this so I could put a retention screw in to hold the led module higher up in the saber. (The closer to the blade you get it and the higher up the brighter it will be. It was falling about 1/3 of the way down before)

Heres how it looks now. It's blindingly bright but in a good way.


Last thing to do is install a d ring or a covertech clip so it can be worn on a a belt and then my journey to full on dork will be complete.
