HBO's Cavalcade of Misery Presents: Sharp Objects

Post by Simple Torture »

Was True Detective too light-hearted for your taste? Well then I have some good news for you.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Loved the editing and sound design, as well as the little details that play on the fact that we are seeing this story through a very unreliable perspective, such as the protagonist's thoughts manifesting as ominous words that flash over screens and signage. Also the blending of past and present. It could come off corny but they pull it off really well. The set-up feels somewhat familiar, though, and I feel like I have a pretty good idea of where the story is going. Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson are great. Will keep watching.

Having read the book, I don't remember much about it at all other than teeth being a thing. Well I have a Go sub so I may as well use it for this, yeah?

The book was merely ok. Pretty obvious but kinda fun.

Was the book awful? I read Dark Places on vacation once and it was one of the worst pieces of crap I've ever read...And yet I enjoyed the Gone Girl film, and this show is off to a good start. My hunch is that Flynn is a great creator of creepy modern stories, but not a terrible writer.
I read it quite awhile ago so I can't speak to it. As for Gone Girl, I read that and it infuriated me to no end. To the point where I have no urge to watch the movie, regardless of how much I like the talent involved.

The only bit that stuck out to me is the teeth thing because of how weird and creepy it was.

Gone Girl seemed to put some people really on their edge. I remember LV hating the movie.

I do appreciate how much this show forces you to pay attention. If you look down to check your phone for one second you can miss 4-5 flashes of an image, or a face, or whatever and it changes the perception of what you're watching. There aren't many other shows that I can remember that try to represent trauma like this, and I like that. I am more interested in the form than the story/mystery right now, I think.

stopped watching half way through ep3. i don't have the attention span. the flashbacks are incredibly annoying. and i can't keep track of which girl she's investigating.

poor mans true detective.
