This is a bad match. I'm going with the lesser of two evils: "Fall Back Down", a terrible single (their first after their major label distribution deal) where Rancid tries to deliver both a radio hit and a Social Distortion song.

Also the music video features the guys from Good Charlotte and Kelly Osbourne!

That other song is generic and stale as they come

Interesting fact about "Fall Back Down": it was inspired by Tim Armstrong's breakup with Distillers lead singer Brody Dalle, who cheated on him with her current husband Josh Homme. At least I think they're still married.

I was always under the impression that Rancid was an older punk band that somehow got a little attention when pop punk became popular. Most of what I've heard from them sounds like basic punk to me, though I'm far from an expert.

Rancid "rose from the ashes" of Operation Ivy, a very influential 80s ska-punk band. Rancid was formed in the early 90s by the bassist and guitarist of Op Ivy, and they were sort of swept up in the mid-90s pop-punk popularity wave, but they stayed independent (at least until 2003, where they signed a "distribution deal" with Warners). Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I really like parts of this Rancid song -- that first guitat solo for example, and the chorus.

The other song is dime-a-dozen, characterless emo-punk.

Rancid getting a vote for simply being Rancid here. Their 2000's material outside of the 2000 self titled leaves a lot to be desired, it's almost a good thing they've only released 3 albums since Fall Back Down.

Story of the Year sucked when I was 13. Of course I still hate it.

I will say that this one is the best song I've ever heard from them.

The whole Warner "controversy" surrounding Indestructible was fucking stupid.

Epitaph (their former label) has had a partnership with ADA (Warner-owned) for years.

The idea that any band with any sort of following can get their shit out without a major distribution deal is dumb.

I am not bothered by it, but it also wouldn't have been that much of a controversy if Rancid hadn't made a big deal -- even several songs -- about their commitment to DIY, maaaaan. It was a big part of their image and mission statement during the height of pop-punk, so the optics were bad (even if it wasn't a traditional "major record deal" a-la Offspring leaving Epitaph). IMO, it would have also not been that big a deal if Indestructible didn't mostly suck, and the "Fall Back Down" video didn't feature dancers and weird celebrity cameos

Part of the fun of a tournament where most of the songs are bad is trying to find reasons to vote for one song over another. Shrugging is boring. Pick one, cowards
